Editorial Review :

Over the last five years, there has been an explosion of bestselling acid/alkaline based diets. These have ranged from weight loss to diabetes management. While hundreds of thousands of people have gone on this diet that balances the pH level of your body, they have had to put up with the limited food guides contained in each book. Now, health experts Dr. Susan Brown and Larry Trivieri have created a complete resource for people wanting to widen their food choices. The Acid/Alkaline Food Guide offers dieters an easy-to-follow guide to the most common foods that influence your body’s pH levels.

The book begins by explaining what the acid/alkaline of your body has to do with the acid/alkaline influence of foods. It then explains how the pH of foods, once eaten, may change in your body—as citric acid fruits, once digested, become alkaline. As complicated as this process is, the authors provide the guidelines for the analysis of the foods covered in the book. This section is then followed by a listing of thousands of foods and their acid/alkaline ranges. Included are insets and groups that can help the reader better direct their food searches.

This is the first complete acid/alkaline food guide to include today’s modern diet. It will quickly become the first resource to turn to when preparing meals or ordering food.

Excellent Easy Read

This book is more than a food guide - it explains in easy to understand terms why one would want to follow this type of diet. It's easy to understand, explains the basic premise well, and I trust the food guide more than others because these foods were lab tested for thier effects on a person's body pH. The guide is easy to use - I keep it in my purse. I eat very well (a lot!) and feel great!

Lose that belly flab!

I think this was a pretty good diet for that problem area--the belly! I've been trying for years on this one, but I do think this wouldd work, if you wanted to go for broke and just do it. It's concentrated and a little intense, but most diets are, right? Anyway, I liked it and would recommend it, if you want this sort of commitment. If not, you can try this diet: Fatass No More! How I Lost Weight and Still Ate Cheeseburgers and Fries, which was one of the easiest ones I've ever followed and actually I did lose weight on it. But this one is good if you want to lose those last few pounds.

Not the best book for those experienced in dieting

This book was just okay. I've dieted many times before and would say I know a fair deal about the differences in saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, trans fats, etc. The first half of this book just gives very, very basic dieting information--eat breakfast, keep it lower on the calories, explains the different types of fats, why monounsaturated fats [what the book calls MUFA's] are good for you, etc. The basic concepts of the diet are that you eat every four hours, eat 400 calories per meal, and have a MUFA at every meal. The only part of the book I found particularly helpful was that they gave you specific recipes that included the MUFA's, a short list of specific meals at fast food restaurants to eat, and a list of MUFA's to choose from. The problem I had with their recipes, though, is even though they say they chose items that were popular and easy to find, I had a rather difficult time finding the exact items listed, so I ended up buying things close enough to it. They don't really explain in detail how MUFA's are actually going to make the belly fat melt away, and I have suspicions that it may help you lose belly fat simply because you are eating at least every 4 hours and eating only 400 calories per meal. I haven't been on the diet long enough to see any difference, so only time will tell. If you're a bit of a novice to dieting, then this book would be good for you, but if you're a bit more familiar with how the body works on diets, then you're better off just borrowing this book from the library.

Solved my Blood Sugar Highs!

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I started this way of eating (WOE) on 07/22/08 and from day one my blood sugar never went over 110. It had previously been between 150-250 (even while taking 4 insulin shots a day and 2000 mg of Metformin). I have lost almost 40 lbs in 3 months and have never been healthier. If you have the will, this will be a life changer for you.

Most successful diet I ever used.

I will put this very simply. I had tried many other diets that only worked while I was on them. Dr. Atkins' diet taught me how to eat healthy, feel full, and after I lost the weight I wanted I was able to maintain my weight by continuing to eat most healthful foods. He also explained why his diet works and what to look for in the foods we eat. I would also like to point out that I started an exercise program of walking 1 mile 5 days a week when I could and going to a gym 2 days a week for 30 minutes. I went to Curves for women but any program would work. It is much easier to keep off the weight and feel good by continuing to eat heathy using this book and excersing at the same time. That is the purpose of a diet - helping you to make healthy lifestyle changes, and this diet did it for me.

A Must For The Atkins' Lifestyle

I purchased this book because I wanted to see what, if anything, Dr. Atkins had changed from the earlier edition(s) and this editions provides more insight and just tells it like it when you need to change your eating habits and the possible reasons an individual has a weight problem. I am now down 25 lbs and having a great time trying recipes and getting into clothes I haven't worn in a while.

Unhealthy Diet - I Met Dr Atkins Personally

In 1998, my company at the time asked me to meet Dr Atkins with a view toward a business deal we were contemplating with him. He was so unhealthy in appearance (palid, exhausted) that I told my boss "Don't do a deal with this guy, I think he's going to die soon." Since then, I've done more research into the science behind low-carb/high-protein. The fact is most Americans already get enough protein in their diets. They also get too many carbs, but that's from overeating and over-indulgence in highly processed foods... not because carbs are inherently bad. Moderation on all fronts is the only diet that works. Eating mostly meat is going to work as well as the Banana Diet did, you'll lose weight at first but then get sick and ultimately gain it back.

The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss
Price : $14.95 $7.61

Average Customer Rating :

Editorial Review :

From patient advocate Mary Shomon, author of Living Well With Hypothyroidism, here is the first book to tackle the weight factors specific to thyroid patients and detail a conventional and alternative plan for lasting weight loss.

An estimated 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease—most of them women—and for the majority of them, losing weight is mentioned time and time again as a primary concern and chief frustration—a challenge made more difficult due to the metabolic slowdown of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. For these thyroid patients, treatment alone doesn't seem to resolve weight problems. Further, they may struggle with raising basic metabolism, resolving underlying nutritional deficiencies, treating depression and correcting brain chemistry imbalances, reducing stress, and combating insulin resistance.

The Thyroid Diet will identify these factors that inhibit a thyroid patient's ability to lose weight, and offer solutions—both conventional and alternative—to help. It will discuss optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low-glycemic, high-fibre, low-calorie diet, eaten as smaller, more frequent meals to balance blood sugar. The Thyroid Diet addresses the use of various herbs, nutritional supplements, and prescription weight loss drugs, outlining the necessity of exercise, and drawing together all information into an integrated diet and exercise plan. It contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems.

Mary Shomon has been praised by doctors around the country for her medical knowledge and sensitivity to patients' needs. She will be receiving similar blurbs for this new book. There are no other books on controlling your weight problems if you have a thyroid condition, yet over 40% of overweight people have evidence of a thyroid condition, and the weight loss problems facing them are unique and need a specific approach.

Finally a book that covers the topic of 'what is it I can eat and lose weight' if you're dealing with hypothyroidism. Excellent choice. Have recommended it to others.

One of the best books on Thyroid I have read

I have purchased several books on thyroid, regarding hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, graves eye disease, hashimotos thyroid and more. Although they all have very good information, NONE of them gave me the information I wanted/needed regarding this consistent weight gain that I am having! My doctor does not see it as a problem. I need to keep purchasing larger clothing, and have lost my confidence in the way I look and feel. It affects who I am. Some articles or websites say, you now have an oppportunity to experience a new look. Well, I liked the old one just fine, thank you.

This book has some very good information about what supplements to take, and which ones are a waste of money. It talks about diet, exercise and explains everything in a friendly way, like someone who is just sitting across the table, sharing a cup of coffee.

It does not talk down to you. It does not act all clinical and doctor view style. It is down to earth and in explainable terms.

I give this book 5 stars. It is fantastic and I have recommended it to people I know who have thyroid problems and issues with the weight gain.

Eating For Life Eating For Life

Editorial Review :

Did you truly enjoy the food you ate today? Do you really like the way you look and feel? Are you consistently enjoying great health and high energy?

Bill Phillips, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Body-for-LIFE, believes your answer to all of the above questions should be, "Yes!" He feels that food should be a source of pure pleasure. A source of positive, abundant energy! A "sure thing" in a world of much uncertainty.

Phillips, who's widely regarded as today's most successful fitness author, has firm beliefs which go against the grain of today's popular weight-loss methods. "Diets, all of them, are potentially dangerous, most always dumb and ultimately a dead-end street!" he insists. "Eventually, anyone and everyone who's at all concerned with their health must learn how to feed their body, not how to starve it."

Instead, Phillips encourages a safe and sound solution which includes eating balanced, nutrient-rich meals, frequently throughout the day. "This is what works in the long run," he explains.

Rich with common sense and science, Eating for Life has rhyme and reason. It is specific. There are very clear dos and don'ts which help people enjoy food and improve their overall fitness.

Bill's approach, which he calls the "Eating for Lifestyle," has already helped thousands of people break free from the dieting dilemma and discover that, contrary to pop-culture belief, food is friend, not foe. Used intelligently, it nourishes the body and mind, satisfies the appetite, calms cravings, renews health and lifts energy.

Like Bill Phillips' Body-for-LIFE, this is a tell-it-like-it-is book. There's no promise of a quick fix. No metabolic tricks or so-called miracles. Just straightforward, clear, concise, practical and appropriate principles for eating right... for life.

Buy it! You won't be sorry!

I purchased this book along with the Body for Life book 8 weeks ago. This book makes the transition to this new program so easy! The recipes are great and what I love is that each recipe is for the whole meal: not just an entree that you have to select side dishes to go along with. It completely removes all guess work! The only thing to realize is that women do need to adjust the amounts, as these recipes seem to be geared for men's portions.

Buy the BFL book and this one. That's all you need to get started. I am a 51 year old grandmother who has never "pumped iron" in her life, but I am a convert now! I'm in my 8th week of my first 12 week challenge and have already lost 23 pounds. Normally (in the zillion other diets I've tried), I would have been bored out of my mind by now. But this is fun and exciting because the results are almost immediate. One thing that WAS immediate was my surge in energy. It was amazing how quickly that occurred.

I highly recommend this book and the original Body for Life book. Do yourself a big favor and do this. I can't believe it took me so long to even learn about this, but I'm so glad I did. I will follow this plan from now on. I feel so great, I don't want to stop!

Questions & Answers
Question : How can you eat a high fiber diet without getting gas?
I am pretty healthy and i eat so much fruit and i guess i do get a lot of fiber, and i like eating healthy but the problem is that i get a lot of gas afterwards, so its like..weight loss, healthy, with gas, or unhealthy. it doesnt bother me now, but when i start school i dont know if being healthy and having a high fiber diet is worth it! This is probably what i will hav on a typical day. (this is probably a lot less fiber than what i am eating now) breakfast- yogurt, whole wheat toast, fruit lunch- chicken salad, green tea dinner- lean protein, brown rice, veggie.. but that is alot less than im eating now, so maybe ill be okay? can you give me some advice?? i mean, fiber is good for weight loss, its necessary! i just dont know if its worth getting gas for.

Answer:
I know what you mean. I eat over 50 grams of fiber every day from fruit, oat bran and TVP. The gas was terrible, but after a while my body has started to adjust. I took beano, a pill dedicated to the elimination of methane production from starchy foods. I would go to the drug store and try to find something similar.

Question : How long does it take one's body to become accustomed to a diet high in fiber?
My diet is very low in fiber. I eat very little fruits and vegetables, rarely eat whole grain foods, and avoid beans. I recently started a diet that encourages eating many foods that are high in fiber. Now I have lots of energy, but I'm having some intestinal issues. I'm on my eighth day of the diet, so it's too late to gradually add fiber to my diet. So how long until the bacteria in my intestine level out and I feel normal?

Answer:
It isn't to late to go back and start gradually. I would actually recomend that. You should never change something like that over night, you are less likely to stick to your new high fiber diet, and you will have the complication you are expiriencing with your intestines. Go need to start over, but do it gradually, each day add another 2-4 grams of fiber into your diet until you get back to your desired level. The process may take a little longer, but you shouldn't have bowl problems and you will be a happier person.

Question : Is a High Protein High Fiber Diet a healthy diet?
I'm considering trying to get more protein with the right amount of fiber to support it ... but not overdoing the protein, I don't wont to develop gout or anything lol! So, no I am not talking about Atkins or whatever, just changing my daily % that I eat of those categories that's all. Take for instance I'm thinking of the following: 1270 cal per day Protein (27%) = 85.73g per day Unsaturated Fat (18%) = 25.4g per day Saturated Fat (4%) = 5.64g per day Carbohydrates (51%) = 161.93g per day Recommended Fiber = 45g to 70.73g per day I am a Female Five Feet and Three Inches 25 years of age I currently weight 173.5 (as of four days ago, last weighed) I am Vegan So, "Is a High Protein High Fiber Diet a healthy diet"?

Answer:
its recommended to consume 25-35g of fiber a day - twice as much will definitely make you severely bloated and gassy 86g of protein is not "high protein" diet.

Question : What are best high fiber foods to help with a high fiber diet? looking for something fulfilling and healthy?
What are best high fiber foods to help with a high fiber diet? looking for something fulfilling and healthy?

Answer:
whole wheat breads, whole wheat cereal, whole grain pasta, oatmeal, raw fruits and vegetables.

Question : What would be an ideal fiber % for a 120 lb Lab? The vet said to put him on a high fiber diet like Purina....?
Proplan but I was told when looking for food make sure the first ingredient is a meat, not corn, or byproduct. I thought corn makes your dog poop alot. Any suggestions, experiences with a dog on a diet? I don't have an American Field Lab. The vet thinks his bloodline is from overseas, Germany. He is a full blooded Lab and he is about 20-25 lbs overweight (according to my vet who breeds Labs and German Shorthairs and has since the 70's) We walk 30-45 mins up and down hills 2 times everyday and he runs loose about everyday for 15-20 mins. I feed 2X a day, a little over 1 cup each feeding! I have a huge brown dog! The AFL is half the size of the European Labs

Answer:
He's not 60 pounds over weight....male labs can be between 75-85 pounds and not be considered overweight. My male black lab weighs in at 95 pounds now...he had been eating Pedigree weight loss dog food, and since he is down we have switched him over to the weight maintenance formula. Our vet is pleased with his weight....Exercise is just as important as diet though...daily walks will help.

Question : Has anyone ever tried the high fiber diet?
Have you ever tried it? If so can you recomend any good sights, menus, meal ideas, etc???

Answer:
I tried a few times and it's nice but not something you can go for a long time. It's good if you want to feel "clean" but on the downside, it feels heavy also. Breakfast, fruits and oatmeal and milk. Lunch, fruits, vegetables, salad, cup of brown rice. Dinner is fruits, vegetables, a bun. In between I take high fiber biscuits, corn, fruit juices, and yogurt.

Question : Why does a high fiber diet lower blood pressure?
I already know that a high fiber, low sodium, and low fat diet lowers your blood pressure. DUH. What I can't seem to find is the reasons these things are true. I'm writing a paper on blood pressure and I've found so many great sources, but not one of them tells me the actual physiological reasons that this type of diet lowers blood pressure. If anyone could point me to some sources on this I would really appreciate it. Any doctors out there??? : )

Answer:
The reason is that fiber diet maintains the normal motility of intestines and forms a layer on the mucosa so that fat and other stuffs are not absorbed in the body; and are expelled out during defecation. This is a strong hypothesis.

Question : High fiber diet and fiber supplements to lose weight?
I've been doing some research on using a high fiber diet (35+ grams a day) and fiber supplements (like glucomannan) to lose weight. Anyone have a successful experience with this? Please include how many grams of fiber a day you consumed, what supplements you took, and how much weight you lost. Thank you!

Answer:
You need to be very careful. You are treading the line. A high fiber diet is fine, but remember too much of a good thing is always bad. The key is moderation. Misus of those suipplements can laed you stright into Anoerexia.

Question : NEED Help with diet plan and shopping list, I did some quizzes and the best diet so far for me is HIGH FIBER?
OK I am not interested in spending money every week and paying fees. This is the internet, there has to be some place to get a Diet plan AND shopping list for free!! My question has two parts: ONE does anyone know where to get a ABSOLOUTLY FREEEEE Diet Profile and SHOPPING LIST? And TWO: Does anyone have a Diet plan and shopping list for the HIGH FIBER DIET? I took several online tests and quizzes from places like ediets, diets, so on so on haha even celebrity fit club. But the most common answer for me since I am on the run, am a total fast food, microwave food, skip meals, only eat once or twice a day usually in the evening kinda gal WAS recommended to do the HIGH FIBER DIET. Any and all help on this would be so appreciated.

Answer:
This menu planning site is written by a Registered Dietitian, and includes a diet wide in variety, including fiber. The site includes recipes and shopping lists. Boost fiber in the diets by choosing whole wheat products whenever possible: breads, pasta, cereals (hot adn cold), including dried beans and peas in your meals, nuts, fresh fruit, coconut, and all sorts of vegetables whenever possible. http://www.uclick.com/client/adv/mu/
