| Editorial Review :
Heart disease is largely preventable, but conventional cholesterol management is often inadequate. According to university cardiologist and leading prevention specialist Dr. Stephen R. Devries, avoiding heart disease requires a far more comprehensive approach that balances new high tech testing with low tech treatments. Now, in WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT CHOLESTEROL, Dr. Devries combines natural treatments with the latest scientific advances. New types of cholesterol tests are highlighted that go far beyond routine testing to identify hidden risks. Expanding the traditional medical model, Dr. Devries illustrates the role of mind/body interventions, lifestyle, supplements, vitamins, and conservative use of medication for optimal prevention.

Wow, Eye Opener!
If you are reading this I'll assume you have a heart...and it's beating. If this is the case you need to read this book "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About(TM):Cholesterol: The Latest Natural Treatments and Scientific Advances in One Breakthrough Program". An easy read and so informative. I plan on giving copies to all those I care about. I wish I knew this information years ago, but it's never to late to make changes and improve your heart health. Another book I highly recommend is "Reverse Heart Disease Now" by Dr. S. Sinatra not quite as easy to read but has soooooooo much information that it's worth the effort.

This book helped me drive down ldl from 152 to 95 in about 5 weeks. I reccomend it for anyone who would like to address their cholesterol situation without using prescription drugs.

A sensible, balance approach to a healthy heart.
As a former Health and Science Editor for American Medical News, I can heartily recommend "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Cholesterol." Dr. Devries offers a wonderful array of information and advice in plain English -- from what to eat and how to exercise to how to understand medical test results and work with your doctor.
One of the best features of this book is the way it merges traditional medicine with alternative approaches. This book does not present a lecture from a know-it-all conservative, traditional doctor or a treatise from a fringe physician on how health food and yoga will save your life. Instead, this book presents a balanced, reasonable approach to strong hearts and healthy lives by a traditionally trained physician who is open to new ideas, as long as they are proven and sensible. Dr. Devries integrates the best of both worlds, traditional and alternative.
Another appealing feature is the fact that some sections and chapters are clearly aimed at those who just want a simple explanation, while other sections and chapters provide detailed information backed up by rigorous research and thoughtful medical expertise for those who want to understand the science behind the suggestions.
Everyone should be as fortunate to have Dr. Devries as his or her personal doctor. The next best thing would be to read his book...and take it to heart.

This is excellent reading for health care professionals as well as people who are not in the medical profession. It gives a great understanding and motivates the individual to keep healthy. I have given 14 books to my friends as gifts.

Five stars for Devies' book
Dr. Devries did an excellent work in presenting medical research on heart disease and cholesterol in an easy read fashion for the lay person. The manner in which Dr. Devries writes makes heart disease and cholesterol a "a no brainer" to understand is superb. Dr.Devries has been my health coach for the past 4 years. His understanding of the subject has made the world of difference in my understanding my own health. Through his methods, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are closely monitored and controlled. I am very grateful for his medical care and expertise which is now offered to the world through this book.

Mars and Venus Diet and Exercise Solution rocks!
Although the content of this book is somewhat repetitious, the suggestions for boosting metabolism and improving diet are great. I'm drinking the activated water in the morning and bouncing and shaking my way to a day with increased metabolism and energy. I'm using the Isagenix shakes in the morning as part of this program and so far so good.

Nutrition truly changes your life
The Mars/Venus Diet and Exercise solution is the missing link in my life. For 20 years, I have searched for wholeness, of mind, body and spirit. I work tirelessly to release with the emotional and spiritual pain of my past so that I may grow spiritually. I pray and meditate daily. I exercised regularly and I eat as healthy as one can in West Texas, lots of fruits and vegies, limited fried food and sugar. With all of this, I still felt fatigued, irritable and overwhelmed. After reading Dr. John Gray's book, I began using the recommended products and information in he book. I have been amazed at the results in my life the lives of my family and friends. I have since been privately trained by him as a nutritional cleansing coach so that I may help others. His information about how diet and excercise effect addiction has literly allowed me to help many people who struggle with food and alcohol addiction. The information on brain chemistry is fascinating and brings to light the differences in men and women. My marriage has come alive and my 5 year old said, "Mommy, you and my sister (hormonal 12 year old) are so much nicer now!" This book is a must read for anyone who wants to fill better and who are committed to a life change. Here's too a healthy life filled with joy, peace and happiness. Frustrating and Enlightening
"Without a nutritious diet, we don't have the fuel to make more endophins." ~ pg. 102
If any book can be frustrating and enlightening at the same time it is "The Mars & Venus Diet and Exercise Solution." This book is filled to the brim with interesting information on dopamine, serotonin, testosterone and endorphins. You will learn about the top forty serotonin-producing foods and how to get endorphins to release into your body. There is also a good amount of information on how to make your relationships work. There seems to be a biological basis for everything John Gray has been teaching for years. He explains why women are obsessed with giving too much and how to get men to give more. It is logical and makes complete sense. He also gives some of the real reasons marriages fail. I thought some of the information was very interesting, especially about why men may become workaholics:
"By increasing mental stress by taking on too much work (deadlines and long hours), men in particular stimulate the production of endorphins to reduce mental distress and anxieties temporarily." ~ pg. 103
While this is very helpful and intellectually exciting, I think the actual diet can be confusing. In the section on following the Mars & Venus diet I came across many frustrating things. Each morning you are supposed to drink a glass of water enriched with lemon juice, honey, trace minerals and aloe vera juice. This drink is also taken after you exercise in the morning. That means you are taking minerals twice. The problem I see with this is that you are also taking trace minerals with your morning health shake. (This drink is also recommended for fasting - should you take that many minerals in a day?)
My main question really is: "Is it necessary to take so many trace minerals?" The morning shake is made with a number of ingredients that can also be found in the Mars & Venus Superfoods Shake. In fact, you can skip mixing up the shake from scratch and just purchase the shake online. My problem with the shake is that it contains blanched almond meal and I'm allergic to nuts in general.
I looked up the Isagenix products and read the lists of ingredients. There are three products you could buy even though John Gray also says you can find other brands (he doesn't mention which ones so I'll give you that information).
The products you can buy (at the Isagenix website) include the Mars & Venus Superfoods Shake ($45), the Super Cleanse ($30) and the Super Minerals (also contains lithium - $30). So you can get the entire program for under $105.
Some options for the same types of products (Total is $131 with the optional cleanse) include "Nature's Plus Spiru-tein Tangerine Dream (Nature's Plus - Tangerine Dream Spirutein Shake 1Lb - $18)" which I've taken for years (compare ingredients to the Mars & Venus Superfoods shake) and the addition of Omega 3 Fatty Acid capsules (Nordic Naturals - Complete Omega/Lemon, 1000 mg, 60 softgels - $17). If you want to add in Yucca try Solaray - Yucca - 100 Capsule - 490 mg - $6.
This is easier than making the shake and adding in flax seeds, protein powder, yucca, enzymes etc. If price is a factor then you can see the difference in price. However, I read the ingredients on the Mars & Venus Super Cleanse and found it is not as good a product as Dr. Natura's Cleansing Product Colonix - Internal Cleansing Program (Liver, Kidney, Colon, And Parasite Cleanse) - FREE UPGRADE TO EXPEDITED SHIPPING - $90). The thing to note about the Dr. Natura program is that the "Paranil" product has wormwood. This is not good to take for an extended period of time. The "Colonix" is a good cleanse on its own.
Once you read the book you can then use these ideas to your advantage. The ingredients recommended will optimize brain chemistry and this will make you feel better. I've been taking a shake with amino acids for years now and it does make you feel more healthy. The Nature's Plus Spiru-tein Tangerine Dream (or other flavors) is an excellent product that contains most of the ingredients (just take Yucca and Omega 3 capsules as well) in the Mars & Venus Shake.
To finish the book, John Gray also briefly discusses the benefits of aromatherapy. He also talks about spirituality and how dietary changes can even cause cancer to go into remission.
Overall I think this book is very enlightening. The frustrating part can be easily solved by buying the shakes in powder form. There just doesn't seem to be enough information to make the program work when mixing up the drink at home. I found that section to be very frustrating because no exact measurements were given.

Discrediting
After checking this book out from the library, I purchased it so I could make notes and use it as a reference along with my select few books on health and nutrition. Pages two and three bullet point interesting ideas like how certain food combinations will put a man to sleep but put a woman in the mood. Well, if that's in the book, I haven't found it yet. What I have found is endless reference to how I will feel once on the "Mars and Venus Diet and Exercise Solution." But there is no solution, just a constant reference to it.
This book disappointed me so much because I loved the book, "How to Get What You Want, and Want What You Have." The book is about removing emotional blocks that prevent you from moving forward in life. Now that I've read this diet book, with so many questionable terms like, "cold pressed aloe vera" (what does that mean?) and his ideas about chromium, I'm ready to chuck everything. The worst part of the book for me was on food combining. He just combines everything as far as I can tell. Other books will have you not combining certain foods because they cause gas and acidity when mixed together. John Gray clearly is a novice in this field and though discovered some neato stuff in his research, should not have created his own system for others.
As for me, I've been studying health and nutrition for 25 years. I haven't been over weight in 27. I don't believe in dieting to lose weight, but I do believe in proper nutrition. At a bargain rate this book isn't worth it not to mention all the time you'll waste reading and being confused.

The Mars and Venus Exercise Solution:
Great book, experience how simple it is to 'fix' bad diet problems - learn how to supplement your brain chemistry for optimum happiness; no wonder many people are miserable, its simply lack of proper natural ingridents which we have taken for granted. No suffering, no strange complex diet rules, just be sure to ADD the very few items all brains need, and you will feel good.

Fighting Fat After Forty is validating!
I haven't even finished this book and I've lost 10 pounds. This is the first weight loss in 5 years for me and all I did was change the times I eat! Pamela Peeke is the first doctor to truly understand and work with how a woman's body changes during perimenopause and menopause and it really validates you as a person. You aren't nuts; you really are changing. I can't believe how motivated I am. This is a definite buy and a book that I will save and give to my own daughter.

Be Prepared to Fight Back!
I first heard about Dr. Peeke on Discovery Channel's Body Challenge. I read this book cover to cover and it hit me; this is why I've had trouble losing weight! It helped me to understand how stress-eating was affecting my inability to lose weight; or to keep it off. I highly recommend this book and I'm not kidding about how much help it's been to me. The proof is in the 24 lbs lost and 4% fat loss in 10 weeks! What do you have to lose???

Fight Fat After Forty
This book is amazing! It is exactly the solution I needed! It explains, in detail, what is happening to my forty something body. My body has been changing for years now, and the weight has piled on and the old solutions just don't do it anymore. This book has helped me to understand that this has been going on for awhile and unless I change the way I treat my body, it will not get any better. It's not about DIET, but about what you eat and when you eat it. It's about recognizing when stress hits and navigating through it in a non-destructive manor. I now have hope and can't wait to begin this new journey. I realize that without my health and well being, I have nothing. Thanks!

Fight Fat Over Forty Explained and Helped a Lot
I'm a Stress Overeater over 50 and this book explains a lot. It also explains why it is necessary, not overindulgent, to continue with my twice per week personal trainer for upper body and core workouts (which I rarely would do on my own) and my twice per week long hikes. I have made other changes which have helped me slowly but surely "remove" the excess weight. If I don't do something perfectly, I don't stress over it, which helps in the long run. For some reason, this book made sense to me and convinced me of what habits I need to stop, continue, and do more of.
I also can spot stress undereaters, and I am now more compassionate than envious (the ones I know are thin and look good, but I know they are also stressed.)

Slow Burn: Burn Fat Faster By Exercising Slower

Enjoy the process of exercise and eat right. Nothing complicated here, just good sound advice and reminding.
The book offers good advice on exercising, particularly on running, and nutrition. Stu places a lot emphasis on endurance training rather than speed; he also creates a model of exercise that revolves around the enjoyment of the process as the only way to develop the long-term habits of exercise.
I bought the book because I wanted to learn what Stu did to maintain such physical fitness and endurance in his 50s. The book covers his exercise and nutritional philosophy quite well, although the information is not revolutionary. Mr. Mittleman has an incredible record as an endurance athlete and in this book he teaches us his simple to follow approach for a healthy, energy-filled life. Stu Mittleman is an incredible role model and an extraordinary athlete. Enjoy!

Good, but...
Like all exercise books this one is difficult to review, because everyone comes looking for different information, different motivations, & how much information they want.
First, let me say, I write as a casual runner who keeps getting more into the sport (that's why I read the book). I am looking for the nuts-and-bolts of programs & diets, but not necessarily a bunch of anectdotal stories and/or paragraphs & paragraphs of material that could be said in one, maybe two, paragraphs, which is what I found much of this book to be. Second, I do love his basic running methodology, the heart rate material, & training advice, which, if this was a 20 page booklet with that information would receive 5 stars.
With that said, here is my basic take on the book:
The book is divided into three sections - thinking, training, & eating.
The THINKING section I could do without - believe you can achieve, set goals, and work for it ('baby steps'). If you are a runner, then you probably have some motivation and goals, so this isn't that helpful and will not provide anything different from what you have heard or read before.
The TRAINING section, I believe, is the best part, but, again, there is a lot of extraneous material and he spends 4 or 5 pages for what should be said in 1 page. The big error in this section, however, is that there are no in-depth training programs for particular distances. So, if you are looking to train for a marathon, then this section will not provide you with specifics. Yes, there are broad guidelines, which will help any runner, but not the specifics. Yet, he recommends his website "for more information about more specific 5K, 10K, and marathon training charts", but I found none at his site. Maybe you have to pay for them? But that is part of the reason I bought the book. Overall, however, his Most Efficient Pace, Mostly Aerobic Pace, and Speedy Anerobic Pace material is helpful.
The DIETING part has some interesting tid-bits (I want to get my acidity tested), but, as a person generally interested in fitness, I didn't find a lot of new material here - eat a lot of veggies and fish, avoid processed foods and sugars - although possibly some strange stuff. The supplement section is interesting and useful.
In short, I think the book is very worthy of a library checkout, but is not necessary to add to your personal library. You will lose weight, burn fat, and be in much better shape if you follow Mittleman's program, so that is worth 5 stars, but the book itself, which should be a booklet, is not.
I hope that helps you in your purchase decision process.

Excellent
The author is very thorough in explaining how the whole physiology while exercising works. Not in a general way but very specific to the topic and to what you need to know related to what you can implement in your daily routine. It is easy to read and brings you to the point that you can make decisions about how you want to exercise, how often and what to eat. I have been running for 26 years - competetive and recreational - but never experienced the joy of running this way.

Questions & Answers
Question : What is a really good, natural food that is high in fiber?
I try to eat high or moderately high fiber cereals most days.
Unless you eat about 8 bowls though, none of them are going to give you all the fiber you need. And in terms of general nutrition, that would be way too much cereal anyway.
Are there any fruits or vegetables that are very high in fiber and are reasonably nutritious in general?
Answer:
You can get plenty of fiber in your cereals along with fruits, vegetables, & whole grains. In fact, many cereals--including Raisin Bran (anything "bran" really) and just about anything by Kashi, will be high in fiber. Oatmeal is good (like some here have mentioned & for other reasons, but at 3gm a service--only a modest amount for a "grain"). And celery, like most veggies has fiber--but not this huge amount someone else claimed (maybe 2 gm).
Biggest thing everyone here has forgotten to mention--many BEANS are very high in fiber. Forget about those BBQ beans with all the added sugar though...
Bowl of Raisin Bran: 8gm
1/2 cup pinto beans: 8gm
Apple: 3-4gm
Pear: 3gm
(medium) potato w/skin 4gm
Sandwich w/typical
whole wheat bread: 6gm
There you go--easy 32-33 gm in one day!
Just don't forget the water--the more fiber you eat, the more you'll need to drink! And yes, just like everything--more is NOT better. But since most people get something like 10-15 gm/day--I wouldn't worry about it. Gradually increase your intake with a goal of 25-35 gm day...

Question : Does anyone know some high fiber foods that are easy to take on the go?
I am always running around, between school and work, and I need to find something that is high in fiber that I can just grab and snack on while in the car. Thanks for any help!
Actually I am right, it is "fiber". You are thinking of the word "fibber" which is a liar. I looked it up in the dictionary. There is no such thing as "fibre"
I'm sorry, I'm in America and we say "fiber".
Answer:
By the way, if you were from England then you will eat 'fibre' in your automovile in your way to a Cricket game.
For quick snacks it is hard to beat dried foods like apricots, dates or raisins. Fresh fruit like orange, apple or pears can make an excellent snack.
Don't forget or be afraid of almonds, for snacks. Pack with fiber but also good fats and minerals.
If you have time to prepare food, then I would recommend baking your own muffins with whole wheat flour. I make mine and add wheat bran or oatmeal bran or flaxseed. Great source of fibre and nutrition are the legumes, like lentils, beans, garbanzo (chickpeas for you English!) Mix your legumes with brown rice and you'll have a great meal loaded with fiber and complete protein.
Another great source of fiber are avocados. I enjoy them sliced between whole wheat sandwiches.
In a coffee grinder I prepare a mix of flaxseed, almonds and sunflower seeds. This is loaded with a lot of good nutrition and fiber. I use this to sprincle on anything from yogurt, cereal, smoothies, salsas, etc. I put it in a little baggy and have it handy in places like the office, etc.

Question : fiber suplement 4 dogs or a really high fiber food any recommendations?
my vet rec a high fiber sup b/c he gets colitis alot due to my sneaky children giving him table food
my vet rec a high fiber sup b/c he gets colitis alot due to my sneaky children giving him table food
Answer:
Before I can answer....why are you wanting to know.
updated 1-11-07
Some cases of colitis are due to food sensitivities. To find out if this is the case, a trial diet consisting entirely of ingredients that your dog has never eaten before can be fed for several weeks ( at least 3 weeks, preferably 6 to 8 weeks). A number of commercial diets are made for this purpose, including Science diet I/D (I keep this on stock for diarehea) ,Eukanuba Low Residue Canine (adult) diet, Purina LA and HA (tm) diets, Hill's d/d (tm) diets, Innovative Diets (various types, such as duck and potato) and Waltham Limited Antigen (tm) diets. Be mindful that when you switch a dogs food do it slowly and casually by mixing old and new or you will be steam cleaning your carpets to get rid of the stains.
There are several types of immune mediated chronic colitis in dogs. Please consult your vet. There is lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis, eosinophilic colitis, histiocytic-ulcerative colitis and granulomatous colitis are some of the names of these conditions.
The two most commonly recommended medications for immune mediated colitis are sulfasalazine (Azulfidine Rx) and prednisone. Sulfasalazine is recommended most commonly for lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis and prednisone for eosinophilic and granulomatous colitis.
It is acceptable to use metronidazole (Flagyl Rx) as a substitute for sulfasalazine and tylosin also works sometimes. Metronidazole is used very long term for some conditions and it doesn't seem to cause problems with long term use. Just so you know.
If it works, dietary control of colitis is best, because side effects are not likely. After that, using the medications that work is the best approach. Since you and your vet have found a combination of medications that work, I'd want to go with that approach until it didn't work or until enough time had gone by with control of the diarrhea that it seemed reasonable to cut back on the medications to see if the problem had resolved. Your vet can help you figure out when it might be reasonable to do that.
If for some reason you have any of these meds. CONSULT YOUR VET FOR DOSAGE. A normal dosage for a human can kill a big dog. Do not give your dog any meds with out consulting you vet.

Answer:
It is just possible he may be having some other problem than hemorrhoids?
I would like to advise you to consult a good surgeon. He will do P/R and proctoscopy to make sure that there is no other problem. There are some very important causes for bleeding, that should be ruled out.

Question : Any yummy but high in fiber foods you can think of?
I have decided I need more fiber in my meals, but anything high in fiber doesn't taste that great. For example, most cereals that are high in fiber don't have any taste. Can you think of any food or meal plans that are high in fiber but delicious too? Thanks.
Answer:
Bran muffins with ginger are so gorgeous.

Question : What puppy food is high in fiber?
my pup had an anal abysess so I want to help her not have this problem again in the future and high fiber will help in her diet buy what brands are high in fiber?
Answer:
Any of the better brands like Nutro or Canidae are going to have adequate fiber in them to meet your dog's needs. However, if your dog has chronic anal gland issues, changing the food may not completely solve your problem. Make sure you take your dog to the vet regularly to get her anal glands expressed. That way you can help prevent an abcess in the future!
Good luck!

Question : Good high fiber food for cats?
My 17 year old needs a lot more fiber in his diet. He loves fish and chicken flavored anything, but won't eat much else. The vet tried to put him on Science Diet, but the cat wouldn't eat it. Is there a good dry food or wet even that is high in fiber?
Current diet: Friskies Seafood sensations and friskies wet food, mainly chopped or sliced.
Any suggestions?
Normally, cats are fine on their own, but mine has had a colon reduction and is being prescribed a high fiber diet to stiffen his stool up a bit. This is Vet prescribed, we (the vet and I) are looking for good alternatives to Science Diet, since his Royal Highness snubs his nose at it. Yes, he will starve himself before eating something he doesn't want.
My vet discussed w/d but decided that since it has even less flavor, no way will he go for it. The science diet was bought at the vet, in wet food. Unfortunately my cat is EXTREMELY picky. My vet tried to swap his food another time (while he was there) and the cat simply wouldn't eat for 4 days. Finally he gave up and gave the cat his old favorite, which he inhaled. Basically, if its not Ocean White fish and tuna, salmon, chicken, or salmon and chicken, don't bother putting it down, just toss it in the trash. My other cat tried to bury the SD food.
Answer:
when my cat needed high fiber, my vet told me to feed her pumpkin pie filling. from a can at the grocery store. My cat will eat anything, so she ate it up. It sounds like you may have a more picky eater on your hands, but maybe the allure of people food would be enough.
Good luck!
