a simple transition

This cookbook is the one item that made me feel truly capable to cook and bake vegan. I love these recipes- I've made quite a few and have only had it for two weeks. Colleen has lots of useful tips and interesting tid-bits about the history of different recipes and ingredients. I think this is a must for any vegan!

Wonderful baking book!

This book is a wonderful book for any baker, vegan or not. It begins with an introduction by the author, the always eloquent Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, on how she came to veganism. Following that is the first chapter, which is devoted to the methods of vegan baking - what ingredients to use in place of eggs and dairy products. This section alone is worth the price of the book. Finally, we get to the recipes! Included are recipes for muffins, scones, biscuits, cakes, pies, bread, sauces, and more. Amongst the recipes are tips for getting your creations to turn out beautifully. The last sections are appendices, which include a guide to stocking your pantry plus resources, and three indices. There is truly a lot of information packed into this book.

I have made the banana chocolate chip muffins, bran muffins, pumpkin spice bread, apple cake, and whole wheat bread. All were delicious. I definitely recommend reading each recipe carefully and following the directions exactly. This is important to do when baking anything, but I find that I need to pay extra attention since vegan baking is not the normal method of baking for me. Of course with this cookbook, I fully expect vegan baking to become the normal way for me!

AMAZING!

Such a great cookbook for anyone, vegan or otherwise. The recipes taste the same and even better then their non-vegan counterparts. you are what you eat

I really enjoyed this book. After watching Gillian's tv show, I couldn't wait to get her books and start being what I eat. Her books are very helpful in determining how to correctly address different issues. One issue it helped me with was about my tongue. I had questioned a doctor about it and she simply said "that is the way you are." So to me it just confirmed that you should get an 2nd opinon when possible. So to me if you really want to learn what you are, this is a great book to have.

Brilliant!

I LOVE, love, LOVE Dr. Gillian McKeith's show on BBC America and the book is just as brilliant! It is amazing to me how many people eat chips (aka: crisps), white bread, hamburgers, frozen dinners, take-out and sodas (aka: fizzy drinks) and then wonder why they don't feel well or are tired all the time. Well Duhhhh! :)

If you are looking to change your way of thinking about food and nutrition, then check out this book. It is not a "diet", it is a way of eating for life, energy and radiance from inside and out, weight loss from following this book is the dessert... so to speak.

An excellent how-to book, in plain language, that will help anyone in their struggles to lose weight. Fabulous way to work out!

This is an excellent, effective and realistic lifestyle plan by Jillian Michaels. Her workouts will make you sweat each and every time, but imagining her there with you right when you want to give up half way through your last set is all it takes to get you through it. They are not for the fate of heart, but you can work up to being able to do them straight through with some extra cardio training when you have the oomph for it. Don't be discouraged if you're worn out right away the first few times through. Take short breaks when you need to, but don't give up!

Her meal plans are, for the most part nutritionally sound. Personally I like a few more fruits throughout my day (especially during summer!), so I add a homemade smoothie with 1-3 servings here and there. If you have knee problems, try adding some flax to your diet, and maybe a glucosamine supplement so you don't use that as an excuse to go easy or end up in pain. A lot of her exercises are multi-joint movements that can stress the knees if you are starting out very overweight (squats, various lunges, etc), so you might want to add either or both in anyway. Most of her recipes are pretty scrumptious, but watch your portion sizes since most are for 4-6 people.

It would be nice if some of the advanced exercises had photos, but most are available on Google or YouTube if you're serious about doing this right. Overall, Jillian has done a great job of putting together a surmountable, invigorating life style that will produce results proportionate to the effort you put into making the change to be healthy, happy, and fit. Go for it!

Must Read

If you're serious about losing weight this is the book for you. This book will get you where you want to be if you're serious about it. This is not a quick fix fad diet. Jillian really knows her stuff. I had lost 54 pounds on my own, but the weight stopped coming off and I still had a lot to lose. And I wasn't exercising either, so I wasn't in shape. After doing what she says the weight continued to come off. And the exercises have toned up my muscles and even made them stronger. Lose weight look great and feel great with Jillians book. A must read.

Rating :

Great workout section!

I only used this book for the exercise portion, so I can't comment on the diet portion. But this book is well worth the price for the workouts alone! Once I really followed the workouts schedule as prescribed, I dropped a size in about 6 weeks after a really long plateau.

I disagree with the posters who complain this is too basic, or there is nothing new to learn. The exercises may not be complicated, but that does not mean they are not effective. I had spent over 2 years with a trainer doing weight workouts, but this workout on my own helped me drop another size after I stopped working out with him.

The magic is in the way she composes the workouts. The workouts are amazingly effective if followed the way she lays them out. The combination of lifting with short bursts of cardio really firms up your muscles while burning fat. This type of workout produces more of a leaner/sculpted look, it's not intended for building mass or bulk.

Editorial Review :

In April 2003 Patt Levine underwent "Lap-Band" gastric surgery, one of the primary bariatric surgeries being widely practiced today. As a lifelong foodie, she was expecting the worst when her surgeon's nutritionist handed her dietary guidelines to follow post-surgery, and she was right. With her decades of cooking skills, she immediately set out to devise low-fat dishes that would be just as delicious pureed and chopped as they would be served whole. As an added problem, she wanted to cook for her husband at the same time. This first-ever cookbook for the hundreds of thousands who are lining up for bariatric bypass surgery is proof that it can be done. With collaborator Michele Bontempo-Saray, the author has created 125 recipes that contain no added sugar, are very low in fat, and get their carbohydrates almost exclusively from fruits and vegetables. Each recipe includes specific guidelines for preparation of the dish for every stage of the eating programs for Lap-Band, gastric bypass, and Biliopancreatric Diversion Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) patients, as well as suggestions for sharing meals with those who have not gone through gastric surgery. Creative recipes cover every meal and food—breakfast and brunch, soups, vegetables, main courses, and sweet indulgences.

Customer Review :

The best!

This is the best cookbook out there for post bariatric patients. There are wonderful recipes that are easy to prepare and you are given exactly how much protein you will be getting with each meal - which is more important than anything. I love the fact that it was put together by someone who has had the surgery and that she couldn't find a cookbook out there for herself. Face it there isn't much out there for us. This is a great example of a well put together cookbook.

Perfect cookbook for weight-loss surgery patients

I was a little skeptical at first when I ordered it, but I became quickly happy as I initially browsed this book.

This cookbook, with numerous delicious recipes, addresses several concerns amongst weight-loss patients, whether you have a lap-band, gastric bypass. or BPD-DS:

1. It informs each type of patient how they should ingest the food depending how long it has been since their surgery. For example, if you're recovering from lap band surgery and it's been more than a week, it will inform you that you should puree your food. Beyond that, it will let you know what you should do incrementally. AS WITH ANYTHING, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR ANYWAY - my doctor agreed with most of its recommendations, but you should always be knowledgable about the medical field's recent findings.
2. Nutritional data - calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fiber and sodium. These are all hot topics with weight-loss surgery patients and each recipe gives you a breakdown of each, per serving, to a ludicrous 2-decimal accuracy. This is helpful for ALL of us.

Contrary to another review that I read on this product that initially gave me pause, the ingredients are not too "exotic." I've been cooking out of the Joy of Cooking book for years and nothing within THIS book surprised me in the slightest. If you're used to Stouffers and Hungry Man dinners, you might be a little baffled by the ingredient list; however, casual cooks will recognize most if not all of the ingredients. I was able to find ALL the ingredients at a local Fry's grocery store and Costco as needed.

My absolute favorites in this book are the "asian turkey-filled cabbage dumplings" and the "un-pasta lasagna with tomato sauce" (which uses zuchinni strips instead of noodles). Both recipes make me feel like I'm cheating, but I'm not!!!!

After Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook

This is a wonderful cookbook for people who have had weight loss surgery. It is hard to know what to eat, how much to eat, and to come up with appetizing dishes that are perfect for those of us who have had WLS. The receipes in this cookbook are wonderful - and not just for the WLS eaters, but for the whole family. Those are the kind of dishes that we all need. Also, many good ideas for those of us who go to family dinners, pot lucks, etc. No one would ever know that these dishes came from a WLS cookbook. I'm glad I have this book and know that it will be used a lot in the futture.

I'm not a gourmet cook!

I found the recipes to be difficult and the ingredients hard to find. Also, the authors recommendations for when to advance from liquids to mush, to soft, etc did not follow my surgeons. One has to keep in mind her recommendations are more guidelines and you should always follow your doctor's. I did like that fact that she has had surgery and could relate to some of the difficulties.

Best High Protein Cookbook

Loved this cookbook! Recipes are easy to follow and can be eaten by the family who did not have surgery. I would purchase again w/no hesitation, way better than The High Protein book.

2 Great books in one!

Awesome! I love those girls! The book changed my life! And now I have the recipes to go along with it! YES! It's such a nice little compact book set! LOVE it!

Glad I read it!

I read a lot of reviews before I picked up this book. A lot of people complained at the manner in which it was written. I am not easily offended, so I found this book a lot of fun to read because of it's straight up honesty. I felt it was very motivating to make changes in my life.

I've made a few of the recipes in the cookbook. And the food is delicious. I could eat that club sandwich for lunch everyday and not get bored with it. It's amazing the difference you feel when you start reading ingredients and choosing such healthy food.

And to those who say that these women are basically making you starve yourself with this food...I have to disagree 100%. The food is delicious and good for you. It still has calories you need, just less fat calories that you don't. And most of this food is cholesterol free.

Needless to say. This book has made me change the way I look at food, and I feel a lot better for it.

Rating :

Well done

This book is a great answer to the problem of connecting veganism to modern day, trendy, youth culture.

It's not too hippie-ish or off the main stream like you often find with some veg cook books. It's hip, no holds barred, and easy to read. Young women won't even necessarily realize they're eating sans cruelty - they'll just think they're having fun reading and cooking yummy, healthy food.

The potato & pumpkin curry is to die for!

Best Read Yet

If you are tired of being lied to about the facts, then you need to read Skinny Bitch. It will open your eyes to what you thought you knew, and clarify the questions you may have. Don't be upset, there is some swearing, but their book clearly denotes a "tough love" approach. Enjoy!

Rating :

Funny!

This is a funny, crude book that is often shocking. It teaches about veganism and is enough to motivate a person to become one. But, I got over it about a week later.

Question : Does anyone know some high fiber foods that are easy to take on the go?
I am always running around, between school and work, and I need to find something that is high in fiber that I can just grab and snack on while in the car. Thanks for any help! Actually I am right, it is "fiber". You are thinking of the word "fibber" which is a liar. I looked it up in the dictionary. There is no such thing as "fibre" I'm sorry, I'm in America and we say "fiber".

Answer:
By the way, if you were from England then you will eat 'fibre' in your automovile in your way to a Cricket game. For quick snacks it is hard to beat dried foods like apricots, dates or raisins. Fresh fruit like orange, apple or pears can make an excellent snack. Don't forget or be afraid of almonds, for snacks. Pack with fiber but also good fats and minerals. If you have time to prepare food, then I would recommend baking your own muffins with whole wheat flour. I make mine and add wheat bran or oatmeal bran or flaxseed. Great source of fibre and nutrition are the legumes, like lentils, beans, garbanzo (chickpeas for you English!) Mix your legumes with brown rice and you'll have a great meal loaded with fiber and complete protein. Another great source of fiber are avocados. I enjoy them sliced between whole wheat sandwiches. In a coffee grinder I prepare a mix of flaxseed, almonds and sunflower seeds. This is loaded with a lot of good nutrition and fiber. I use this to sprincle on anything from yogurt, cereal, smoothies, salsas, etc. I put it in a little baggy and have it handy in places like the office, etc.

Question : whats a good healthy high fiber food?
whats a good healthy high fiber food?

Answer:

Question : High Fiber Food?
Say if you owned a grocery store and someone asked you for high fiber food with lots of vitamin A what foods would you recommend him or her?

Answer:
Liver, fish liver oils, kidneys, butter, some margarines and spreads, full cream dairy products, egg yolk are high in vitamin A. Some sources of vitamin A that contain fiber are green leafy vegetables, broccoli, yellow and orange vegetables and fruit.

Question : What puppy food is high in fiber?
my pup had an anal abysess so I want to help her not have this problem again in the future and high fiber will help in her diet buy what brands are high in fiber?

Answer:
Any of the better brands like Nutro or Canidae are going to have adequate fiber in them to meet your dog's needs. However, if your dog has chronic anal gland issues, changing the food may not completely solve your problem. Make sure you take your dog to the vet regularly to get her anal glands expressed. That way you can help prevent an abcess in the future! Good luck!

Question : Good high fiber food for cats?
My 17 year old needs a lot more fiber in his diet. He loves fish and chicken flavored anything, but won't eat much else. The vet tried to put him on Science Diet, but the cat wouldn't eat it. Is there a good dry food or wet even that is high in fiber? Current diet: Friskies Seafood sensations and friskies wet food, mainly chopped or sliced. Any suggestions? Normally, cats are fine on their own, but mine has had a colon reduction and is being prescribed a high fiber diet to stiffen his stool up a bit. This is Vet prescribed, we (the vet and I) are looking for good alternatives to Science Diet, since his Royal Highness snubs his nose at it. Yes, he will starve himself before eating something he doesn't want. My vet discussed w/d but decided that since it has even less flavor, no way will he go for it. The science diet was bought at the vet, in wet food. Unfortunately my cat is EXTREMELY picky. My vet tried to swap his food another time (while he was there) and the cat simply wouldn't eat for 4 days. Finally he gave up and gave the cat his old favorite, which he inhaled. Basically, if its not Ocean White fish and tuna, salmon, chicken, or salmon and chicken, don't bother putting it down, just toss it in the trash. My other cat tried to bury the SD food.

Answer:
when my cat needed high fiber, my vet told me to feed her pumpkin pie filling. from a can at the grocery store. My cat will eat anything, so she ate it up. It sounds like you may have a more picky eater on your hands, but maybe the allure of people food would be enough. Good luck!

Question : What foods do you recommend for a high fiber diet?
I am dealing with hemorrhoids, and I'm only twenty two, but they have gotten pretty bad. As a result, i'm trying to eat a high fiber diet. Usually it consists of --apples and pears --triscuits --raisin bran/raisin nut bran --oatmeal --whole grain pasta Can anyone tell me what foods they eat that help them increase fiber in their diet? I know that regular fruits and veggies should do the trick, but its not in this case. I am going to see my doctor tomorrow, because its gotten so bad, but whether or not i have to have it surgically removed, I am still going to need a high fiber diet. It would be great if there were any snack foods you could suggest that I could munch on throughout the day. I guess you could say I'm looking for very high fiber foods in particular. A super fiber food (if you will). Any suggestions? The more specific the better. Thanks!

Answer:
Be careful about suddenly increasing your daily fiber intake. If you suddenly add large amounts of fiber to your diet, you may experience bloating, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramping. It is best to add fiber to your diet gradually, eating small amounts of fiber rich foods. Additional fiber can be added slowly until you are consuming a healthy amount. Tips for Eating Fiber * Eat a variety of foods * Do not completely rely on fiber supplements * Limit your intake of processed foods * Increase your fiber intake gradually * Try to consume 25 to 35 grams of fiber every day Types of Fiber There are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers dissolve in water. Soluble fibers include: pectin, guar, carrageenan, gums, mucilage, and oat bran. Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibers include cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Question : What kind of food has a high fiber content? Usually available in grocery stores?
I was grocery shopping today and I was in a sea of sugary, prepackaged junk food! tho there WERE fresh vegetables and produce, but what can i buy so that i'll be consuming foods with more fibers?

Answer:
The most fibrous foods - Apple - Spinach - Kale - Steamed Beetroot - Burghul / Cracked Wheat ( Tabouli) - Mulakhiya ( an egyptian veg from the spinach family.Very good for water retention and constipation) - Dried Fruit and Nuts - A cup of all Bran Cereal first thing in the morning Check out this website
