After Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996, she educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition — by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors and listening to her own body. In 2001, she marshaled everything she had learned as a "patient-expert" into the first edition of this book, which she has now completely updated and revised. The First Year®—Type 2 Diabetes uniquely guides you step-by-step through your first year with diabetes, walking you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of the crucial first year. In clear, concise, accessible language, Becker covers a wide range of practical, medical, and lifestyle issues, beginning with coming to terms with your diagnosis and then moving on to subjects including: Choosing the diet that is best for you The role of exercise Daily blood-glucose testing routines and understanding lab tests Medications and supplements Networking with others Insurance issues Traveling and socializing

Must Have If You Are Recently Diagnosed
This book was so helpful. I know I will learn more from it every day. If you are just diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes it's a must have. I had no idea what I was doing. This book has gotten me through. I highly recommend it.
Rating :
Great book; but was sent the old (not latest) edition as ordered.
Excellent book; very informative and "user friendly." However, I wish I had been shipped the latest edition instead of being "jipped" by receiving the old edition.
Rating :
MUST READ for the newly diagnosed with Diabetes
Before I started my Diabetes education classes I wanted to get some well researched information written by someone who went through it and not by just a Dr. only. This book is helpful and well written...an easy read. Titled clearly for easy to find topics.

The Weight Loss Cure "They" Don't Want You to Know About

| Editorial Review :
By the #1 New York Times bestselling author Kevin Trudeau comes the last diet you will ever need. Imagine, you will lose at least 30 pounds in 30 days...with no hunger...no exercise...and no surgery! An absolute cure for obesity was discovered almost fifty years ago by a British medical doctor. Tens of thousands of people used this simple, inexpensive, safe medical treatment and achieved miraculous, fast, and permanent weight loss. Stubborn area fat deposits melted away. Body reshaping of the hips, thighs, buttocks, and waist was so dramatic it appeared as if the patients received liposuction! Amazingly, this medical breakthrough has been debunked, discredited, and suppressed by the American Medical Association, the Food and Drug Administration, and other medical establishments throughout the world. Now, for the first time in fifty years, this revolutionary breakthrough discovery, which permanently cures the condition of obesity, is being released to the public. The main problems that overweight people deal with are massive, intense, constant physical hunger; food cravings and uncontrollable urges to eat when not hungry; low metabolism; and an abnormally high amount of fat stored in stubborn secure problem areas such as the hips, thighs, buttocks, and waist. This "weight loss cure protocol" has been proven to be virtually 100% successful in correcting these conditions, thus curing the individual of obesity for life! Read the fascinating true story of how this discovery was made and, more importantly, how this miracle weight loss breakthrough has been hidden from the public so that drug companies can make billions of dollars selling their expensive drug treatments and surgical procedures for obesity. You'll be amazed to read how the food manufacturers actually have a financial incentive to make you fat! This is the book that answers all the questions about why people today are continually getting fatter and fatter. The good news is this book gives you the cure that can solve your overweight condition once and for all.

OK
This is not for everyone, but the information is there if you know how to pull it out and put it together for yourself. He uses his web site as a way to buy the products inculding the HCG Shots, but still gives you other avenues as where to purchase what you need.
It works I have tried it (using homeopathics not shots). The biggest part of all of it is the Detox! Kevin keeps saying it is easy, it is not. With that said the secret to it is keeping is simple.
Rating :
This is FOR REAL!
I've been on the HCG diet for two weeks now and I've lost 12 lbs. I have lost 3 inches off of my waist and I am beginning to look fabulous in my clothes again.
This diet takes real committment and it should change the way you see and eat food for the rest of your life following the diet. For instance, 4 oz of meat/protein is all you should have as a serving at mealtime. And you should be prepared to pretty much cut most fat out of your diet and only use 'carbs' as condiments.
But let me tell you - this diet is REAL, it's accessible, and it WORKS! In 2 weeks, I have lost 12 lbs, my husband has lost 15, and each of his parents has lost about 15 as well. We all feel great, we have energy as long as we stay hydrated, and we give ourselves the shots because they are painless and you can't even really feel it. Follow the rules and be committed and you'll do great!

A brand new me!
I am very surprised by all those here in search of a magic bullet. Don't you realize there isn't one! I have read Dr. Simeon's original manuscript and I am currently taking HCG that I received from a licensed physician. IT WORKS! I feel great! I have lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks. I've got 3 weeks to go. I would also recommend that those interested purchase the book titled "HCG Weight Loss Cure Guide" by Pounds and Inches Away, LLC because it's more streamlined than Kevin's book. For me it's not just about weight loss - it's about fat loss! I've lost inches and reshaped my body. Now listen, I found a doctor that prescribes HCG in Aurora, IL - I live about 40 minutes away. I only had to see him twice. Once for a consultation and then for a 2 week follow-up. I know that everyone isn't comfortable with the idea of a self-injection. Trust me...I'd take this over popping pills anytime. It's quick and painless. I took Phentermine years ago which is FDA approved and was prescribed by my primary care physician. The experience is like night and day. I had insomnia, dry mouth, jitters, etc. - it was awful and I loss the wrong type of fat.
Anyway, my HCG doctor was referred by a colonic therapist I found online. Colonics are important too but not absolutely necessary for success. The honest truth is that very few people can actually follow the 50+ suggestions in Phase 1 of Trudeau's book - but that's NOT the point. The point is to make some of the changes so you can live a healthier lifestyle AFTER losing weight on HCG. There are things I will absolutely NOT do since reading this book - like eat anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup or MSG or Trans Fat. I also ensure that I workout daily and I don't eat out much! Shopping at Whole Foods may be more expensive but the cost has been offset by preparing meals at home! One of the greatest benefits is that I'm no longer drinking alcohol and eating sugar - if you want to talk about what's dangerous - I would suggest that you Google "Sugar Dangers".
I mean really...how can anyone claim that a hormone (HCG is a hormone not drug) is dangerous and yet they poison their bodies with growth hormones injected in cows and man-made chemicals in our food and toxic chemicals in our cleaning supplies. Educate yourself! Dr. Simeons graduated Summa cum laude - he's brilliant. This is HIS protocol - not Trudeau's - although I think Trudeau's book is helpful because of the dangers we face today that weren't present when Dr. Simeons found this cure. I could go on and on but some folks just want an easy way out. I came a long way to find this approach - it simply builds on what I already knew - refined, processed foods are bad for you. If it doesn't come from a plant, animal or fish - you're body doesn't need it!
Rating :
Eat Trudeau's book itself - it's healthier!
I can't believe that people are still buying this load of recycled rubbish! Trudeau is a well-known con-man from way back, but maybe after this latest judicial ruling, he won't be so confidant!
-- A federal judge has banned Kevin Trudeau from infomercials in which he has an interest for three years and ordered him to pay $5,173,000 in profits from his book, "The Weight Loss Cure 'They' Don't Want You to Know About."
The ruling confirms an earlier contempt finding against Trudeau -- the second time he has been found in contempt of court in the past four years. In several infomercials, Trudeau claimed that the plan outlined in the book is easy to do, can be done at home, and ultimately allows readers to eat whatever they want. However, the book actually describes a complex plan that requires severe dieting, daily injections of a prescription drug that consumers cannot easily get, and lifelong dietary restrictions.
In a 2004 order settling FTC charges that he had falsely claimed that his calcium product could cure cancer and other serious diseases, Trudeau was banned from using infomercials to sell any product, service, or program except for books and and other publications.
Most folks would be better off gently sauteing this book in olive oil, chopped onion, garlic and ground black pepper and eating it -- mainly for its high fibre content. What could be healthier?
Rating :
Kevin Trudeau is a fraud
The only good advice in this book is basic common sense when it comes to losing weight. From drinking more water, limiting food consumption, to *gasp* exercising and avoiding fast food, Trudeau produces these ideas as if they were his own great epiphany. Indeed, these are the only things to his "weight loss miracle" cocktail that have ever been proven to provide any real results.
He sites an outdated study done abroad, in which people lost weight injecting themselves with something that is "easily obtainable". Yup, along with the needles you'll have to buy yourself, the daily injections you'll have to give yourself, you're reduced to obtaining the liquid you're injecting into your body from less-than-credible people. No doctor will give you the shot, as Trudeau claims they will, as no doctor is foolish enough to inject you with this crap.
Go ahead, take 15 minutes and look up anything about Kevin Trudeau. You'll find nothing positive about his books, and a wealth of information on how much of a crook and liar he is.
And for the record, everyone on amazon giving him a positive review has only written one review: for Trudeau's book. I wonder if those are Trudeau's marketing lackeys...

A concept revisited
I rejected this book some 10 years ago. Owing to health issues I bought a new copy and wish that I had given it the credence it deserves at that time. It is well written, simple but informative in its information and excellently presented. The book is a tribute to the depth of knowledge that Dr. D'Adamo has.

Pleased so far...
I ordered this book because some of my co-workers are on this diet. So far, I have replaced several major food items the book suggested I stop eating with other foods. I actually have lost weight and have more energy. I will continue to do so with other foods.
I think this diet worth considering, especially by those with allergies as I have. I'm hoping for a long-term solution and am keeping an open mind that this will help.

La dieta del Gordo

| Editorial Review :

Customer Review :
technical and cumbersome
I have only had time to look through the book but it seems very technical and cumbersome, even for someone who had read and studied about the best way to eat for almost 30 years. It doesn't seem to be arranged very well and you have to know exactly what you are looking for to find anything.
Rating :
Amazing book
Absolutely wonderful source of information for anyone wanting to know ins and outs of foods we eat. This is the type of book I personally refer to every day. It's the ultimate dictionary on foods, which also provides basics of correctly cooking them, storing them etc. If you want to know what each food contains, how it affects health, and the most effective way to preserve the nutrients, this book is for you.

Excellent Cookbook/ Nutrition Book
This book is a great little package - it's certainly not something you can thumb through and look for recipes like an ordinary cookbook, instad the recipes are found every few pages by food type. My husband remarked that it was like a tomb when I took it out of the box. I think the greatest thing about this book though is that the recipes really do take just 10 to 15 minutes and they taste amazing! The author said he didn't put one food in that was healthy but unpleasant tasting and he was right!

Questions & Answers
Question : How would a vegetarian do low carb and high fiber?
My doctor suggest that I go on a low carb, high fiber diet but I am a vegetarian what would I eat?
Answer:
Yikes - I would run away from that doctor as quick as possible. Did you know doctors have less than three hours of nutritional training? They almost always suggest a high dairy, meat eating diet too, sadly. The low carb craze was the worst thing to ever happen to this country, making obese people think they could just eat dead carcass and cut out carbs and lose weight. Which they did - and brainpower.
Stay away from simple carbs, like white rice, white bread, ect. Replace them to whole grains, brown rice, ect. KEEP EATING complex carbohydrates!! You need them for normal brain function!! Hope this helps.

Question : What is a good choice of high fiber dogfood that is also natural and possibly organic for a diabetic.....?
I have a diabetic miniature poodle who will no longer eat his prescription dog food. I'm looking to buy a high fiber natural or organic dog food for him. I'm looking for someone who really knows what they're talking about and knows dogs, possibly a vet or vet tech. He's been having diaherra and overall he is fairly skinny right now and we're trying to help him gain weight while not making his blood sugar go crazy. Any thoughts?
Answer:
Rather than switch his entire diet, you may actually be able to tweak it a bit so he'll eat it - but also consider whether there is an underlying cause for his unwillingness to eat it.
Let the vet know what is happening, and ask them if there is anything they should check - this may just be a bad sense of taste in general, or perhaps he is having problems with his teeth - or is he on a medication such as antibiotics that could mess it up?
Whatever you do, keep in mind that raw meat can carry very bad illnesses that your dog can get in his compromised state, and can also pass on to you and your family. I would never feed any raw meat to an unwell dog.
If all else looks good, you can also speak to the vet about adding some fiber to his diet, but stay away from canned pumpkin pie filling that we usually use for this - it probably has too much sugar in it for him. You could add a small amount of fiber products made for humans after you discuss it with the vet and read the label - make absolutely sure it is only fiber, and no sweeteners, artificial or otherwise. You could also just give him some cooked green beans.
Speak to the vet about supporting his GI tract with probiotics - he may not have the right environment in his gut to support his own bacteria, and that is what breaks down his food so he can absorb it. That is why he is losing weight. Probiotics are usually in paste or powder form, and can be safely added to just about any dog's diet - it'll only help.
It may be that you need to add some fat to his diet, but disccus this with the vet before you do it - it may be that if you get the probiotics in him, he will absorb enough of his regular food to make the difference, and if it's an absorption problem, the stuff in his bowl won't translate into more weight, no matter what it is.
As for palatibility, or taste, you could store the food with some extra tasty stuff added, so it absorbs the new taste and makes it more interesting. Storing a cup of food overnight in the fridge with a teaspoon of tuna fish tossed around in it can make it much more intriguing!
A few drops of real cod liver oil will do the same thing, while adding virtually nothing to the food...you can also stick a strip of bacon in the plastic container overnight, as long as it is well drained, and discard it before feeding him the kibble.
You can always add some fat-free chicken or beef broth and soak the kibble overnight - anything to make it taste different. If you make up a few batches with different flavors, it may be more interesting than just doing one at a time.
It may be that a holistic vet can help you with his GI tract - there are many amino acids and other factors that can be balanced with supplements, and this particular problem can lend itself better to a vet who uses adjunct therapies rather than whatever a large manufacturer produces for XYZ problem - it isn't the full picture. It's amazing what they can do with a little glutamine and probiotic paste...
Anyway, it's a tough problem you have and it will take some tweaking - good luck!

Question : If I need a diet that is high in fiber, can I short cut it by taking benefiber of metamucil?
I have hemmoroids and need a diet high in fiber. will the above mentioned products help me?
Answer:
you can supplement it with those products, but you really do need to focus on getting your fiber through food.
it's actually a pretty good way to manage calorie intake, too. you're so busy stacking up the fruits and vegetables you don't have time for simple carbs that have no fiber and too much sugar.
and the guy above is dead on target - if you're still eating foods that bind you up, not much will help until you cut down on those. apples and bananas are two things that will cause constipation - but there's a lot of fruit that will help move things along - the three P's especially: prunes, peaches and pears. good salads will help.
and probably what helped me the most was finding a yummy multigrain bread to eat. and don't eat ANY other kind of bread once you find it. look for a decent protein content, and at least 4-5 g fiber per serving.
drink lots of water.
and talk to your doctor. there are other disorders and meds that have constipation as a side effect.

Question : What are the best foods to eat for a high fiber diet?
Like breakfast, lunch and dinner with a grocery list. The price of produce is so high, what about us real folks who don't have mega bucks to spend on all the fancy stuff at the nutrition stores. I want to know some regular ideas for a high fiber lifestyle. Any honest idea's?
Answer:
I adopted a high fiber diet about a year and a half ago and I had the same concerns as you about the costs. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. It does get expensive but I try to eat the kinds that happen to be on sale that week, and I also have a garden and grow what I can myself. Also make sure that you don't peel things like apples and potatoes, since they have a lot of fiber in their skins.
I eat a lot of oatmeal and other high fiber/low sugar cereals. I've switched from regular pasta to the whole wheat kinds. You really have to read labels when you are looking for things like breads, cereals, tortillas, etc. When looking at the ingredients list look for "100% whole grain" as the first ingredient and stay away from products that list "enriched flour". Check the fiber content on the label also, some breads have none and others have 5 or more grams per serving. Avoid white rice and opt for brown instead. White rice has the fiber stripped from it in processing.
You can find recipes for things like whole-wheat pizza crust and whole-wheat pancakes that are affordable to make, taste great, and are high in fiber.
It takes a little work but it is possible to eat a high fiber diet without killing your checkbook. It's amazing how much better you will feel after eating this way for a while.
Good luck!!!
