Customer Review :
Great guide for eating your way to good health
This is a very good and thorough book detailing the 14 foods necessary for maintaining a healthy body and mind. Sadly my two staples, chocolate and coffee didn't make the cut but most of the other foods are things I eat on a regular basis so adding more of these things won't be a huge lifestyle change. You wouldn't think a book about 14 foods would fill a book without putting one to sleep but the author has written the book in such a way that it is easy to skim over the more detailed health benefits of each food and move on to the recipes. I skimmed initially to get a quick idea of what foods I should be focusing on and quickly scan the health benefits and later went back and read the nitty gritty details. For anyone wondering the 14 superfoods are: beans, blueberries, broccoli, oats, oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tea - black & green, tomatoes, turkey, walnuts and yogurt. For more specific info. you'll need to grab a copy of the book ;)

Superfoods=Superenergy!
Once I started reading this book I could not put it down! It is packed with so much information and I have been amazed at how good and alert I feel by changes I have made in my diet.I am a cancer survivor and this book is important to me to help prevent any other types of cancers or heart disease in the future. I also have heart disease in my family. I have been so impressed with this book that I bought 4 more books for my friends, one who was just recently diagnosed with cancer and the other who is a cancer survivor. I will be purchasing 4 more to give each of my children and siblings. So I say this book is a MUST READ!

| Editorial Review :
Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.
Customer Review :
Great tool to understand why you overeat
I've been defently impressed by this book becuase it doesn't speak about anything realted to the food diets but it only is about our mind and propose great tools, wwithout giving any magic solution, to understand your the deep reasons that push anyone to overeat. It is doeasn't matter if you overeat occasionally o regularly, the book helps you to understand and identify the reasons, giving up overeating is the consequent that happens later with strong commitment without forcing yourself becuase you've learned many things about you as an adult. Thanks Professor Gould!

This review refers to the Summary....
I noticed that the lower reviews came from persons who felt that the book didn't cover specifics on what to do to loose the weight. What I felt the author is offering is the "tool" to help you recognize WHY you're overweight and the steps you can take to correct the WHY, which is emotional eating. Now everyone's emotional reasons are different, hence it would be a very lengthy book to read, and it would be too general if "tools" where given. When reading the summary version of this book I was shaking my head in amazed agreement of how relevant and on-point the book was for me. I agreed with the material presented and recognized that if put into practice, I can begin to turn my current situation around emotionally, physically and spiritually. When I purchase the book I will come back to amend my rating.

THIS IS THE ONE!
ANYONE WHO HAS EVER STRUGGLED, WHO HAS FIFTY MILLION DIET BOOKS ON THEIR BOOKSHELF - LOOK NO FURTHER..this book is the one!!! I have 21 diet books, have read them all, tried them all...but this one struck a chord somehow. It explained things in a way that I haven't found before..both my girlfriend and I are reading it and we have already found drastic improvements in the first week. We no longer binge, we stop - we realise no "goal" we make in regards to our weight can control our desire to eat. We have learnt to not lose weight for our husbands, for a dress size, for a weight on the scales - we are no longer thinking of a number to attain - we are just so excited to have found a solution that we can work with. The book is TREMENDOUS - we are in Australia and will be ordering more copies. THANK YOU ROGER!!!!! YOU ARE A GENIUS - THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE THERAPISTS SECRETS - you have saved us heaps of money and lots of emotional pain. Kind regards from two aussie gals happy and well on our way!!

The only weight loss book for me
I have been an emotional eater my whole life. I have tried to find a book that would help me understand why and how to stop, but have never found a good one. I was starting to get hopeless after numerous diet books failed to adress what I was dealing with, that which was preventing me from being able to even start trying a diet. I thought no one understood and I was the only one feeling this way. But then I found this book and it looked interesting so I bought it. So far, I have only read the introduction and first chapter, but I am already hooked on this book. I found so much in only the first chapter that has already motivated me tremendously. I can't wait to finish the book and lose weight, because I know I will with this excellent book!

Thank you for this very well written book with plenty of ah-ha moments.

500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love
Price : $19.95 $6.95
Average
Customer Rating : |
| Editorial Review :
Low-fat or low-carb? A recent New York Times Magazine (July 7, 2002) cover story answered this question and said that Dr. Atkins was right all along, "its not fat that makes us fat but carbohydrates." Though the government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in research trying to prove that fat is the cause of obesity, there has been a subtle shift in the scientific consensus over the past five years supporting what the low-carb diet doctors have been saying all along: if we eat less carbohydrates, we will lose weight and live longer. One of the toughest challenges of any diet is having enough variety and choices to keep the dieter from losing interest. The most common reason that people abandon their diet is boredom but 500 LOW CARB RECIPES: 500 Recipes, From Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love by Dana Carpender has more than enough recipes to keep even the most finicky dieter on track. With recipes for everything including hors dÆoeuvres, snacks, breads, muffins, side dishes, entrees, cookies, cakes and much more, this is an endless supply for creating meals for the whole family night after night. Whether everyone in the family is on a diet or not, these recipes are proven winners with adults and kids alike. Also included:
- Many one-dish meals for single people--main dish salads, skillet suppers that include meat and vegetables, and hearty soups that are a full meal in a bowl.
- Ideas for breaking out of old ways of looking at food with suggestions that save time and money and change what is considered a normal meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Information about where to find low-carbohydrate specialty products and descriptions of low-carb specialty foods found in grocery stores everywhere.
- An entire chapter that lists and describes low-carb substitute ingredients such as fats and oils, flour substitutes, liquids, seasonings and sweeteners.
Dieters will be pleased to know that they can eat foods like guacamole, omelets, pizza, steak, ham and dessert without giving up great taste and still lose weight. There are enough recipes to create the perfect menu for any holiday of the year--including Thanksgiving. Each of the 500 recipes includes a carbohydrate count to help calculate the total carb intake of each menu. There are more recipes for main dishes and side dishes than most low-carb dieters will ever be able to eat--everything from down-home cooking to ethnic fare; from quick-and-easy weeknight meals to knock-their-socks off party food. 500 LOW CARB RECIPES is the last cookbook any dieter will ever need to buy and certain to be used until the binding is worn out!
Customer Review :
Low-Carb Creativity!
This is a great book for low-carb dieters! 500 pages in this hard-cover book with tons of creative recipes from soup to nuts and back again! Everything you need to know about low-carb living, from where you can buy low-carb specialty items without paying through the nose to the list of ingredients you need to know about, is in this book. Despite the fact that this book contains pork and shellfish recipes (neither of which we eat in our family), it is still a great resource for those low-carbers tired of the same old stuff for dinner.

Deserving of the Five Star Reviews
There is a good reason that Amazon has more than 200+ reviews and nearly everyone gives a Five Star rating - the book delivers everything it promises and more! The recipes require few ingredients, many things are found in a well stocked pantry, easy to put together and they taste wonderful. You can grab an idea or recipe from snacks to desserts and everything in between. A quick tasty meal can be on the table while keeping those sugary carbs in check. If you are looking to reduce carbs from your Daily Eating Plan - you will find yourself reaching for this book more times than not. This book makes a great gift for someone special in your life or a great gift to yourself.

Ultrasimple --> No, Excellent --> Yes!
Great "program" not diet. This is not a simple plan. It takes lots of time, planning, and dedication. But the results are outstanding and well worth it, if you can "stay with it". Great philosophy to live life by -- free of all things that make you toxic: not just food, but behaviors, people, jobs, etc. The guidance provided is simple and it is easy to read.

Fraudulent name, brazen advertisements.
The good doctor fills half his pages with "case studies" (sorry, these are only "anecdotes")- He starts every unit with half of the story, then he repeats the WHOLE story with a half page chart detailing the person's measurements. Then he spends several MORE pages whining about how he just didn't have room to include what you need to know to use the diet, so you have to go to his website to download it. Then while you're there trying to get the information to download (and it's more of the same cluttered nonsense) he comes on a movie to explain that he didn't really want to sell anything but so many of us begged so hard that for $[...] a week we can just buy the diet and the supplements. If we want to buy just the supplements, we have to call (yes, by phone, however there is a toll-free number.) And as far as I can tell which could be wrong though I've read the book twice, it never gives clear instructions about what supplements to use. ("Liver support supplements," "probiotics" At least the book purchase comes with free snake oil.) Each day on the diet takes about 7 pages of instructions, and they are EXACTLY THE SAME! I'd bet good money I could get all the information needed for this diet on 5, 3x5 index cards. One for the schedule, one for shopping list, 2 for recipes, and the fifth one will have Our Father on one side and the Kaddish other.

Dieters beware
I bought the book, read some of it (it's so padded with success stories and other non-essentials that the book would likely be the length of a pamphlet if all the extraneous stuff was removed), and my spouse and I decided to give it a try. While the cover mentions a "...simple 7-day weight loss plan..." there is a 7-day preparation period, so it actually takes 2 weeks (which is misleading at best). The diet itself requires some fairly specialized (and expensive) stuff found only in high-end nutrition shops (or on the web) along with lots of veggies and canned beans. I made a big batch of the Ultrabroth (smelling up the kitchen at the same time) and we were ready. One of the first problems we found is that the book has no index, so trying to find specific information is almost impossible. The next problem I had was that the diet made me actively nauseous. I tried for three days to stick with it, using different recipes, but nothing worked: I spent the entire three days within running distance of my bathroom. My spouse has not had that problem, but the diet claims to help one lose several pounds during the diet week, and after four days, he still hasn't found much difference from when he started (and he's one of those maddening types that can go on a diet and lose 10 pounds in the first week!). Finally, a minor quibble: after one logs into the site to download the diet guide (the source of the other recipes/menus and a lot more useful than the book), one gets rather useless emails from the site every couple of days. Just what everyone needs: another source of junk mail. In summary, the book is poorly written, repetitive, and frustrating; as for the diet, I highly recommend that the it be undertaken only after speaking with one's personal physician.

Helped with allergies and blood pressure
I am starting week 3 of the Ultrasimple diet - with some walnuts and seeds added for variety. I've only lost a couple of pounds (thanks to those walnuts and seeds) but after the first 3 days, I did not have my usual allergies, headaches and stuffy nose symptoms I've been living with for a number of years. It was great to know that my allergies weren't just related to cedar and mold. I did find I had more energy by the end of the first week. Like another reviewer I chose to buy my vegetable broth and tried a few different brands. With a little added hot sauce they were all very good. The smoothies are easy to make and change up with tofu and soy milk or rice protein as the base. I always add the almond butter and 1/2 banana to the shakes for extra flavor. I stuck with salmon from Costco's and chicken mostly throughout the diet which was easy to make - add some steamed veggies, a sweet potato or brown rice and it's a quick meal. It is hard to remember which supplements to take when and I finally typed out the basic program and leave it in my kitchen to refer to each day. My only problem is that I bought the book for my Kindle so it makes it more difficult to read and skip around in the book. I also am a little put out by all of the emails to get me to purchase the food - quite expensive. I think it cheapens the message. Lastly, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and have always had pretty high blood pressure. I am now in the normal range. Bottom line, it is worth trying -

Customer Review :
Book is mostly an ad
If you have never heard of PGX, by the time you are done with this book, you will have heard more than you ever wanted to about it. PGX is the miracle fiber that is the basis for appetite control in this book. There is good information here, I just kept getting irritated constantly hearing about this special (and expensive) fiber. I bought the granules and the pills, and the pills are a lot easier to deal with. The granules become jello-like in water and do not dissolve to any degree in smoothies. I have noticed an appetite blunting effect, but there are, ahem, other effects as well. Be prepared for bloat, gas, and frequent trips to the library(or in my house, the bathroom ;)
Rating :
Just an ad for pgx
I don't like it when books are just an ad for a product that the author sells. It really ticks me off because then it's not an objective point of view. Of course the book does give sound advice that you could find in many other books but the pgx products are overrated. I have used the appetite control fiber that tastes like orange and stevia (not very pleasant taste) and I have also used the pills. I didn't really have an gas or bloating problems and I did notice a slight reduction in hunger but nothing to go crazy about. I prefer getting my fiber from real food. Plus, I had to drink a hell of a lot of water which I didn't like. PGX also does not address the psychological reasons as to why someone overeats. There are plenty of people who eat when they are not hungry. The trick is to eat according to the glyemic index, to exercise regularly, control stress and eat mindfully. Your blood sugar levels will normalize themselves with that type of lifestyle. There's no magic pill.

Don't waste your money
Unless you've never read another diet book before.
This book just reiterates everything you've ever read else--glycemic index, exercise, blood sugar stability, portion control, control stress, get enough sleep.
I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Murray, don't get me wrong. He sang the clarion call of nutrition before almost anyone else.
The PGX is nothing more than Gluccoman and coconut oil. They are not doing a thing for me.
The diet consists of breakfast and lunch of their proprietary and not cheap, shake, and a sensible dinner along with a couple of snacks. Sound familiar?
I don't know about my fellow fatties, but there isn't a shake alive that will fill me up for long. And two of them certainly won't hold me till dinner.
Don't spend your lunch money on this book; borrow it from the library instead.

Good news for dieters
Hunger Free Forever: The New Science of Appetite Control I read this book and found it really helped me understand the connection between excess weight, blood sugar spikes, insulin resistance and appetite. I know others who have used PGX with excellent results - so now I am really curious. I can see that if you aren't hungry then you don't need willpower to eat less. Find out how important this kind of fiber is and you will want to use it even if you AREN'T overweight!

Question : high fiber diet for weight loss?
can you lose weight on a high fiber diet
Answer:
you should be taking more than 35g of fiber a day.
as a component of food, fiber isn't absorbed by the body: therefore it dosent contribute calories. that's why high fiber foods such as whole grains, veggies, legumes and fruit -usually lower in calories - are included in weight loss diets. their high fiber content makes theses diets quite filling so you might eat less overall.
very high fiber diets also may some up short on protein foods. an excessively high fiber diet can cause constipation and dehydration if extra fluids aren't consumed.
bulk fillers, which are high in fiber aren't advised. they reduce hunger by first absorbing liquid then swelling up in the stomach. these products can be harmful when they obstruct the digestive tract.
moderation of dietary fiber as part of an overall healthful diet is a smarter approach to weight loss. adding fiber to a healthful weight loss plan - one that doesn't go below 1600cal/day - is a smart idea.

Question : High fiber diet?
I am on a high fiber diet and I am experiencing frequent and offensive gas. I haven't been able to determine an exact food- it seems to be a mixture of everything. Is there a supplement I can take? OTC remedy?
Answer:
Well that is all to be expected with a high fiber diet. It allows food to pass through you quickly. You can take fiber pills or a fiber mix that goes in your drink instead of eating all of these high fiber foods. But you will still experience this gas no matter what you do with a high fiber diet. That is the way it works.

Question : I am trying to do a high fiber diet and loose some weight?
I am eating 30 gr. of fiber a day ! I am feeling great and i have started walking! I was wondering if anyone has lost weight on a fiber diet or not? will it come off easily with exersise? what did you do and eat? I wanna loose 10 pounds.
Answer:
Well I think it's totally about self-control:
Breakfast: integral toast and a 70-calorie yogurt
Lunch: Fruit (any kind, except banana) and a fish (not fried)
Snack if you get hungry: gum or 90-calorie diet bar
Dinner: Light soup (not a creamy soup, it has too much fat)
Or maybe a cup of special K or cheerios
Some other tips:
DON'T EVER DINNER AFTER 7PM, IT HAS BEEN PROVEN IN INVESTIGATIONS AND THAT HELPS A LOT, TRY TO DINNER BEFORE 7, I SWEAR IT'S AMAZING
I recommend you coffee in the morning, it gives you a lot of energy! (without sugar, or maybe splenda)
Another thing is to drink green tea once a day, it burns fat and it's good for your health
And of course, do at least 50 abs per day
Good luck

Question : What foods do you recommend for a high fiber diet?
I am dealing with hemorrhoids, and I'm only twenty two, but they have gotten pretty bad. As a result, i'm trying to eat a high fiber diet. Usually it consists of
--apples and pears
--triscuits
--raisin bran/raisin nut bran
--oatmeal
--whole grain pasta
Can anyone tell me what foods they eat that help them increase fiber in their diet? I know that regular fruits and veggies should do the trick, but its not in this case. I am going to see my doctor tomorrow, because its gotten so bad, but whether or not i have to have it surgically removed, I am still going to need a high fiber diet. It would be great if there were any snack foods you could suggest that I could munch on throughout the day. I guess you could say I'm looking for very high fiber foods in particular. A super fiber food (if you will). Any suggestions? The more specific the better.
Thanks!
Answer:
Be careful about suddenly increasing your daily fiber intake. If you suddenly add large amounts of fiber to your diet, you may experience bloating, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramping. It is best to add fiber to your diet gradually, eating small amounts of fiber rich foods. Additional fiber can be added slowly until you are consuming a healthy amount.
Tips for Eating Fiber
* Eat a variety of foods
* Do not completely rely on fiber supplements
* Limit your intake of processed foods
* Increase your fiber intake gradually
* Try to consume 25 to 35 grams of fiber every day
Types of Fiber
There are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers dissolve in water. Soluble fibers include: pectin, guar, carrageenan, gums, mucilage, and oat bran. Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibers include cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Answer:
yes if you have a high fiber and limit carbs and good fat like olive oil
|
Question : Will a high fiber diet make me loose weight?
I noticed when I eat almonds, I go to the bathroom alot.
I guess it is the fiber in it.
So if I make sure to eat enough fiber everyday will I loose weight? (5ish pounds)
Answer:
High fibre diet is good but be aware that if you have not eaten a high fiber diet before, you will get the runny poops, lots of gas and possibly a tummy ache till your body adjusts. Also, if you eat a lot of almonds it could be athe extra fat in them that gets you going too. Whole grain food and lots of nuts etc taste so good. Good luck!

For a high fiber diet, you want to eat alot of fruits. Peanut Butter is a good source of fiber, but be sure to check the labels, some are higher in fiber than others. Also, swiching from white bread to wheat. Wheat bread has alot more fiber, but again be sure to check the labels. Raisins are a good source. There are alot of things out there with fiber. Check all the labels to be sure though.
