Editorial Review :

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha's Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha's Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz's new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day "MasterFast," which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

  • Maintenance plans
  • Dozens of easy, delicious recipes
  • Real-life tips
  • An extensive glossary of terms
  • A guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and "live" juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body's systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn't just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detox diet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.

Thanks for the heads up!

I was going to look further into this program. I read an article in the November 2008 issue of Essence magazine. I then checked out the price of the book and kit but was told to read the reviews first. I'd like to thank those of you that gave an honest opinion and kept me from wasting my money.

you can't give a bad review if you didn't try it!!!

I bought the book first & once I was mentally ready I bought the plan from Ebay (much cheaper than from the actual site.) I stuck with it for 21 days & I lost 15 lb. It has been 1 month, today, since my 21st day & I am maintaining & I have lost more on my own. This book/plan altered my lifestyle. I cleansed my body, mind, closet, fridge & pantry. I am a procrastinator too - go figure.

My friend just finished & lost 16 lb. If you are ready you will succeed. I didn't do any enemas, colonics, etc. I did what I could afford & had time for. I treated myself w/something ea week. I did the detox bath (very inexpensive) & I had 2 massages. I didn't juice anything either. I just drank what I bought..I did make the pureed soups during week two. I just boiled and used my food processor.

I also think the book is pretty straight forward - meaning the author knows that most people can not follow nor afford the plan like those people that actually go to Martha's Vineyard Detox Center & have all of the resources provided to them. Maybe going to MVineyard would have helped me lose the extra 6 lbs??? Who cares, I lost 15 and I got past the plateau. I am working out (yes, I actually dusted off an exercise dvd & haven't stopped since 8/2).

"not that bad"

I agree with K Copper in the fact that I do what I can, I did find a "green drink" at a health food store and it had the green & berry flavor, trying it alone I could hardly choke it down but now I mix it with crystal lite green tea & raspberry flavored on the go packet, it taste much better, & I also found in the natural section by pacific, a veggie low sodium broth for my soup, I so far have been doing it for 3 days and I lost 4.5 pounds, I feel so much better, you do what you can do.

Helped with allergies and blood pressure

I am starting week 3 of the Ultrasimple diet - with some walnuts and seeds added for variety. I've only lost a couple of pounds (thanks to those walnuts and seeds) but after the first 3 days, I did not have my usual allergies, headaches and stuffy nose symptoms I've been living with for a number of years. It was great to know that my allergies weren't just related to cedar and mold. I did find I had more energy by the end of the first week. Like another reviewer I chose to buy my vegetable broth and tried a few different brands. With a little added hot sauce they were all very good.
The smoothies are easy to make and change up with tofu and soy milk or rice protein as the base. I always add the almond butter and 1/2 banana to the shakes for extra flavor. I stuck with salmon from Costco's and chicken mostly throughout the diet which was easy to make - add some steamed veggies, a sweet potato or brown rice and it's a quick meal.
It is hard to remember which supplements to take when and I finally typed out the basic program and leave it in my kitchen to refer to each day. My only problem is that I bought the book for my Kindle so it makes it more difficult to read and skip around in the book. I also am a little put out by all of the emails to get me to purchase the food - quite expensive. I think it cheapens the message.
Lastly, I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and have always had pretty high blood pressure. I am now in the normal range.
Bottom line, it is worth trying -

Fraudulent name, brazen advertisements.

The good doctor fills half his pages with "case studies" (sorry, these are only "anecdotes")- He starts every unit with half of the story, then he repeats the WHOLE story with a half page chart detailing the person's measurements. Then he spends several MORE pages whining about how he just didn't have room to include what you need to know to use the diet, so you have to go to his website to download it. Then while you're there trying to get the information to download (and it's more of the same cluttered nonsense) he comes on a movie to explain that he didn't really want to sell anything but so many of us begged so hard that for $[...] a week we can just buy the diet and the supplements. If we want to buy just the supplements, we have to call (yes, by phone, however there is a toll-free number.)
And as far as I can tell which could be wrong though I've read the book twice, it never gives clear instructions about what supplements to use. ("Liver support supplements," "probiotics" At least the book purchase comes with free snake oil.)
Each day on the diet takes about 7 pages of instructions, and they are EXACTLY THE SAME!
I'd bet good money I could get all the information needed for this diet on 5, 3x5 index cards. One for the schedule, one for shopping list, 2 for recipes, and the fifth one will have Our Father on one side and the Kaddish other.

Dieters beware

I bought the book, read some of it (it's so padded with success stories and other non-essentials that the book would likely be the length of a pamphlet if all the extraneous stuff was removed), and my spouse and I decided to give it a try. While the cover mentions a "...simple 7-day weight loss plan..." there is a 7-day preparation period, so it actually takes 2 weeks (which is misleading at best). The diet itself requires some fairly specialized (and expensive) stuff found only in high-end nutrition shops (or on the web) along with lots of veggies and canned beans.
I made a big batch of the Ultrabroth (smelling up the kitchen at the same time) and we were ready.
One of the first problems we found is that the book has no index, so trying to find specific information is almost impossible. The next problem I had was that the diet made me actively nauseous. I tried for three days to stick with it, using different recipes, but nothing worked: I spent the entire three days within running distance of my bathroom.
My spouse has not had that problem, but the diet claims to help one lose several pounds during the diet week, and after four days, he still hasn't found much difference from when he started (and he's one of those maddening types that can go on a diet and lose 10 pounds in the first week!).
Finally, a minor quibble: after one logs into the site to download the diet guide (the source of the other recipes/menus and a lot more useful than the book), one gets rather useless emails from the site every couple of days. Just what everyone needs: another source of junk mail.
In summary, the book is poorly written, repetitive, and frustrating; as for the diet, I highly recommend that the it be undertaken only after speaking with one's personal physician.

Ultrasimple --> No, Excellent --> Yes!

Great "program" not diet. This is not a simple plan. It takes lots of time, planning, and dedication. But the results are outstanding and well worth it, if you can "stay with it". Great philosophy to live life by -- free of all things that make you toxic: not just food, but behaviors, people, jobs, etc. The guidance provided is simple and it is easy to read.

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars

Editorial Review :

Since its first publication in 1997 Diabetes Solution has become the treatment of choice in the medical field in America. Dr Bernstein's ground-breaking approach to diabetes care enable patients to take control of their disease to live long and healthy lives by regulating their blood sugar without the usual swings. Dr Bernstein is living proof of the success of his method and in this revised and updated edition of his work he gives an accessible, detailed guide to his revolutionary approach and outlines his plan for preventing or reversing long-term complications of the disease. He offers the most up-to-date information on new products, medications and supplements and explains the connection between obesity and age-onset diabetes. He discusses breakthrough science and potential cures and has added new methods of treatment, including new uses of medication and exercise approaches, as well as adding 40 new gourmet, low carbohydrate recipes in addition to the original 50.

Customer Review :

Thank YOU Dr. Bernstein!

This book was a wellspring of information for me as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Getting off the cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, seeing my blood glucose spike from doing just what I was told, and getting medications increased again and again, I read what Dr. Bernstein said with interest. After trying his recommendations I can say with no reservations that this book may have saved my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes and hope that the general medical community opens their eyes. After only one day of this diet my blood glucose readings were close to normal, and continue to stay there, with less medication. My energy levels are high and I have felt better than I have in a long long time. Kudos to you Dr. Bernstein, for daring to say the truth! I recommend both his books and also Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution to anyone who wants to learn about diabetes and diet.

Works For Me

I'm a Type 2 Diabetic that has had great success following the dietary recommendations Dr. Bernstein puts forth. His pragmatic diet has been a great help in moving my A1c down to the normal range. I've lost a needed 50 pounds. Overall, this book is loaded with good information for diabetics.

Rating :

Tough, Intensive but Effective . . . but Not Much Left to Eat

Dr. Bernstein's book will result in lowering your blood glucose level. However, it is extremely difficult to follow -- he recommends only 6 grams of carbs for breakfast, and 12 grams for lunch and dinner, no fruits of any kind, only a few slices of lettuce & avocado. Absolutely no grains or cereals or pasta or bread of any kind. So basically, if you follow his strict diet, you'll be eating lean protein with 1/2 cup of broccoli or lettuce, and 2 nuts. Is that possible? Maybe, if you're a zealot with no human cravings for rice or bread or pasta EVER.

I found a lot of useful information in this book though, such as his exercising program -- he states aerobic exercises are of no value to diabetics, which I found very revolutionary. Instead, he recommends resistance anaerobic training, inverse-pyramid method. I have tried this exercise out, and sure enough, it is a lot more difficult than walking or running for 30 minutes. But it does appear to build more muscle.

I felt depressed rather than hopeful after reading this book. To not be able to ever eat an apple or a piece of fruit is depressing. I can deal with not having a pie, cake, chocolate or cookies. But to snack on a sugar-free Jello with 1 tablespoon of whip cream for the rest of my life surely sucks and makes me wish for a cure instead of having to follow this impossible low-carb diet.

Read this book for what it's worth -- it has very good information & a personally inspiring story but I am not sure if you'll feel very hopeful after reading it in terms of managing your diabetes for the rest of your life.

totally different!

Loved it. Easy to read. Totally different from what I had read so far regarding diabetes. Helps reconsidering goals and treatment.

Perfect for new diagnosed patients, expert patients and physicians as well.

My Gold Standard for the treatment of my diabetes

It was only through Bernstein's book that I was able to appreciate the importance of maintaining a low carbohydrate diet if I were to ever achieve "normalized" blood glucose and hope to avoid the long term complications associated with the disease. Bernstein, first trained as an engineer, later as an M.D., offers a wonderful "nuts and bolts" approach to maintenance of diabetes whether type 1 or type 2. His standard of control set the bar high where, in my opinion, it needs to be. I wish that my Father, who died of diabetes complications, had been privy to his approach and had available to him the instant test methods for blood glucose that are now available.

Editorial Review :

Devin Alexander, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Biggest Loser Cookbook, lets you have your cake and lose weight, too, with sinfully tempting — yet amazingly healthy — recipes for America’s all-time favorite foods.

Chef and former L.A. caterer Devin Alexander has maintained a fifty-five-pound weight loss for over sixteen years by transforming the dishes she and millions of other Americans love best into guilt-free (yet still outrageously mouth-watering) indulgences--Rigatoni with Meat Sauce, BBQ Bacon Cheeseburgers, Eggplant Parmesan, Sinless Yet Sinful Sticky Buns, and even Dark Chocolate Layer Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

Thesesimple-to-prepare recipes for the kind of delectable dishes people crave but feel they can’t eat when trying to be healthy and trim, actually can be the basis of a personal weight-loss plan. They can also be a way to add “off-limit” foods back into an already successful diet. Or they can simply be part of an exciting new way to eat healthfully — and with pleasure.

In The Most Decadent Diet Ever! Devin Alexander proves that even the most decadent dishes — Chipotle Chili with Blue Cheese Crumbles, "Fried" Jumbo Shrimp, Super-Stuffed Steak Soft Tacos, Fettu-Skinny Alfredo, Godiva Brownie Sundaes, and Chocolate Chip Pancakes — can lead to weight loss, good health, and carefree enjoyment.

Don't need a diet book!

This is a book for someone looking to follow a diet plan. Not for me. Also, she uses sugar substitutes, which I don't like and don't agree with me physically. So, I returned the book. I'm sure this book is great for someone trying to find a good diet with great recipes. It just wasn't for me.

Great Everyday Food Made Light and Easy

I am a habitual purchaser of cooking magazines and cook books. Typically I'll try a few recipes from each and toss the issue/book aside for the next one. Not this one!

I received the book Friday and have made three recipes so far (breakfast sausage links, pumpkin pie bars, and herbed crab salad). Each one has been easy to make, uses ingredients that you may already have on hand, and the results have tasted wonderful!

I used turkey instead of pork in the sausage and it was pretty good, but I suspect pork would have been much better. Next time I might try grinding my own lean pork (grocery stores only carry ground pork that's really high in fat here).

As for the pumpkin pie bars, my husband who hates all things 'diet', loves them.

The crab salad is great on it's own and makes yummy sandwiches (top with lowfat swiss, green peppers, and a little more mayo).

I plan to make more recipes--this seems like the book I've been looking for. Common, everyday food that uses easy to find, cheap ingredients, with results well worth eating.

great recipes

After having this book for a while I am finally getting around to writing my review. We have had several of the recipes and have loved them all!
When we had the family over for Easter I made the chocolate cake. My husband does not like cake at all. He even said that at the table and followed it up by saying "but this is good!!"
After my husband had his heart attack he said fettacinni alfredo a.k.a. heart attack on a plate is something he will never eat again. I made the fettaskinny adding grilled chicken. When he saw what was for dinner he almost walked away. I had to get the book and show him the nutrional content. He ate it and said " this tastes like something that should be very bad for me" : )
It's nice to be able to cook food for the family that not only tastes good but is good for you.

Best cookbook ever!

I had to chuckle over some reviews upset that it's a cookbook, not a diet book, and other reviews that claimed it's a diet book, not a cookbook! LOL!

It's both or either, depending on what you are looking for. A diet to follow if you want one, or just great tasting recipes that are healthy if that is all your are looking for. If you missed that, well...go back and take another look. It is a CINCH though to use in tandem with Weight Watchers as the recipes tend to be 100,200,300, etc calories and nutritional information is included for easy figuring of point values.

Some recipes use sugar substitute, and she explains that the client the recipe was created for ASKED for that. MOST recipes use the real thing so do be aware if you are diabetic that the recipes are not sugar free. However, any cookbook that can create a chocolate cake with TONS of chocolate icing at only 250 calories for a HUGE piece of cake(and Not ONE speck of sugar substitute was used!) and satisfy this chocoholic's craving is a winner in my book!
My hubby is a Texan who thinks every meal needs to have real meat in it, preferably BEEF. But he also really needed to lose some weight. I have made most of the recipes in the book and so far, he has been happy with everything I'm made and even requests some recipes over and over. He's lost 40 pounds in 4 months and has meat every meal. Granted most are made with chicken, but beef is included 2-3 times a week so he can live with that. :) We recently went out to eat breakfast and I had to chuckle that my "I love deep fat fried food, the greasier the better" hubby commented that the eggs were greasy! It was the bacon I noticed, but we both had to laugh at how quickly we had learned to appreciate great food without all the grease! That makes me happy because I know now that this is not a "fad" we are going through, but a life long way to cook that will keep us healthy and trim. I'm learning how to adapt my old recipes to Devin's way as well. These are recipes that we are willing to eat the rest of our lives, that don't make us MISS my old way of cooking and that is the key to a life change. You have to know you can live with it forever if you are going to do it forever and Devin has shown me that is doable.

Because of Devin, I've gone looking for other cookbooks that work for us. Many cut fat and calories by removing all the goodies or reducing them to barely tastable in a recipe and don't replace them with anything that makes up for it. Not acceptable to us. They still have to taste good and satisfy or we can't stick to the plan and start cheating. Devin's recipes do just that.

Evelyn Triboles books are also excellant if you love Devin's books. Evelyn's Healthy Homestyle Deserts is tooooo yummy! GIve it a try if you can find it!

Question : High fiber diet and fiber supplements to lose weight?
I've been doing some research on using a high fiber diet (35+ grams a day) and fiber supplements (like glucomannan) to lose weight. Anyone have a successful experience with this? Please include how many grams of fiber a day you consumed, what supplements you took, and how much weight you lost. Thank you!

Question : Can I lose weight by going on a high fiber diet?
I know high fiber diets are to prevent constipation and lower cholesterol(sp?), But can it help me lose weight? with exercise, of course.

Answer:
Yes it most definitely can! Just don't eat a lot of other junk that will hurt your efforts. Eliminate fast food. Substitute fruit for sweets. Forget that white flour and sugar exist. You will find SO many things you love. Of course have a pizza and some ice cream for a treat once in a great while but for your regular eating patterns, stick with the healthy stuff. Eat more than you do now.......just make sure most of your plate is filled with vegetables and fruit....keep meat to a minimum and eat only a small amount of healthy fat like olive oil (our brains need SOME fat to function properly )

Question : Any yummy but high in fiber foods you can think of?
I have decided I need more fiber in my meals, but anything high in fiber doesn't taste that great. For example, most cereals that are high in fiber don't have any taste. Can you think of any food or meal plans that are high in fiber but delicious too? Thanks.

Answer:
Bran muffins with ginger are so gorgeous.

Question : What is a good choice of high fiber dogfood that is also natural and possibly organic for a diabetic.....?
I have a diabetic miniature poodle who will no longer eat his prescription dog food. I'm looking to buy a high fiber natural or organic dog food for him. I'm looking for someone who really knows what they're talking about and knows dogs, possibly a vet or vet tech. He's been having diaherra and overall he is fairly skinny right now and we're trying to help him gain weight while not making his blood sugar go crazy. Any thoughts?

Answer:
Rather than switch his entire diet, you may actually be able to tweak it a bit so he'll eat it - but also consider whether there is an underlying cause for his unwillingness to eat it. Let the vet know what is happening, and ask them if there is anything they should check - this may just be a bad sense of taste in general, or perhaps he is having problems with his teeth - or is he on a medication such as antibiotics that could mess it up? Whatever you do, keep in mind that raw meat can carry very bad illnesses that your dog can get in his compromised state, and can also pass on to you and your family. I would never feed any raw meat to an unwell dog. If all else looks good, you can also speak to the vet about adding some fiber to his diet, but stay away from canned pumpkin pie filling that we usually use for this - it probably has too much sugar in it for him. You could add a small amount of fiber products made for humans after you discuss it with the vet and read the label - make absolutely sure it is only fiber, and no sweeteners, artificial or otherwise. You could also just give him some cooked green beans. Speak to the vet about supporting his GI tract with probiotics - he may not have the right environment in his gut to support his own bacteria, and that is what breaks down his food so he can absorb it. That is why he is losing weight. Probiotics are usually in paste or powder form, and can be safely added to just about any dog's diet - it'll only help. It may be that you need to add some fat to his diet, but disccus this with the vet before you do it - it may be that if you get the probiotics in him, he will absorb enough of his regular food to make the difference, and if it's an absorption problem, the stuff in his bowl won't translate into more weight, no matter what it is. As for palatibility, or taste, you could store the food with some extra tasty stuff added, so it absorbs the new taste and makes it more interesting. Storing a cup of food overnight in the fridge with a teaspoon of tuna fish tossed around in it can make it much more intriguing! A few drops of real cod liver oil will do the same thing, while adding virtually nothing to the food...you can also stick a strip of bacon in the plastic container overnight, as long as it is well drained, and discard it before feeding him the kibble. You can always add some fat-free chicken or beef broth and soak the kibble overnight - anything to make it taste different. If you make up a few batches with different flavors, it may be more interesting than just doing one at a time. It may be that a holistic vet can help you with his GI tract - there are many amino acids and other factors that can be balanced with supplements, and this particular problem can lend itself better to a vet who uses adjunct therapies rather than whatever a large manufacturer produces for XYZ problem - it isn't the full picture. It's amazing what they can do with a little glutamine and probiotic paste... Anyway, it's a tough problem you have and it will take some tweaking - good luck!

I have a cat that gets constipated often. He has been at the vet several times for it and has had enemas. I noticed that the canned food that he eats has lowered the fiber content. What canned food has a high fiber content that I can switch him to? I have 3 other cats so I prefer to first try a food that is not a prescription food.

Answer:
Have you spoken to the vet about any drugs that would help him? Constipated cats can be helped greatly by one or both of the following: lactulose and cisipride (Propulsid). When an all-canned diet isn't enough, then it could be time to add one of the two laxatives. It really isn't pleasant for a cat to get constipated and get enemas, and these drugs can help very much. Has the vet done x-rays to determine if he's got a condition called megacolon? Something you might want to mention at your next trip to the vet.
