Eat This, Not That (for kids)

This is a great book and really informative. Some of the items in the book were very surprising (some shocking!) so it's good to know what you are feeding your children!

Eat this not that for kids

This book is great. My children, aged 13 and 11 are interested and are more aware of healthier eating choices.

Rating :

Fun for launching the conversation

As others have pointed out, this is a guide to foods available in restaurants, many of which are not terribly healthy (one of the "Eat This" choices consists of nothing but fried food). However, since kids often like this junky food, it's a great tool for helping them read the fine print and discover why the all-fried-food meal on the "Eat This!" page is, believe it or not, slightly better for you than the meal on the "Not That!" page. It has a magazine-y look with photos of foods and dialogue bubbles with a digestable amount of information. You can use it with your child to talk about what constitutes a "healthier" food vs. a "healthy" food.

Read This, Not That

I brought this book into my seventh grade science class and my kids cannot take their eyes off it. The photographs of all their favorite foods immediately capture their attention. The nutrition information is well-researched, thorough, and positively encyclopedic. This book is a must for all parents.

Not just for kids

I accidentally ordered this volume instead of the original one that I guess was intended for adults. Even though I don't have kids, this was still a good read. I don't have to worry about school lunches anymore, but there was some great info on vending machines. After a few days, I gave it to my co-worker (with kids) and bought the original version.

Life-Altering Secrets from Today’s Cutting-Edge Doctors and the #1 New York Times Bestselling Author of Ageless

Today’s most trusted advocate of antiaging medicine, Suzanne Somers, deepens her commitment to helping people lead healthier, happier lives by opening their eyes to cutting-edge, proven remedies and preventative care that most doctors just aren’t talking about with patients: longevity medicine and the more progressive study of bioidentical hormones.

As we age, certain hormones diminish, creating an imbalance that can set off everything from perimenopause to cancer, beginning as early as our thirties. This hormonal imbalance is causing many to feel depressed, anxious, fatigued, sexless, sleepless, and ultimately ill, sometimes even terminally. What’s more, Somers and twenty doctors in the field of antiaging medicine argue that the processed chemicals in foods and pharmaceuticals we ply ourselves with are actually slowly eroding our bodies and minds. So we’re getting slammed twice. From estrogen dominance to deceptive thyroid problems, people are suffering, and most don’t have access to the treatment they truly need to get better and thrive . . . until now.

Breakthrough explores cutting-edge science and delivers smart, proactive advice on the newest treatments for breakthrough health and longevity.

In addition to being a pioneer in a rapidly growing health field, Somers is a passionate, caring individual whose own life was derailed by disease and brought back to unimaginable, feel good heights that she wants you, too, to experience.

a great book to study for health issues

I saw Suzanne Somers being interviewed on a talk show about her new book, "Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness." The one thing that she said on the show that really caught my attention was about this vitamin called aldosterone, which one doctor says can heal loss of hearing. I was so hopeful, so I had my daughter buy the book for me. We found out that the vitamin-- or whatever it is --is a mystery ingredient. My daughter looked it up on the internet and couldn't find much about it. That part was a big disappointment, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the book overall.

Her list of eight steps are pretty basic in promoting good health:
1. Detox the chemicals out of your body
2. Replace your hormones naturally
3. Maintain a healthy GI tract
4. Avoid taking as many pharmaceuticals as possible
5. Supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals
6. Exercise regularly
7. Avoid chemicals in your home. Clean green.
8. Get the proper sleep. More and more studies show this to be very very important.

Some other things I learned is to take Q-10 if you are taking Lipitor, which I take. Another is to take some form of hydrochloric acid to prevent stomach problems.

One day not long ago I noticed that one-third of my eyebrows on the ends had disappeared. When I read about that in the book, I was so surprised. It means you have or have had thyroid problems. I take medicine for my thyroid.

I guess another thing that I wanted to know was if Suzanne wrote the book herself. You know that famous people hire ghost writers. Both my son and daughter looked all through to book to find this out for me, but we all decided that she did write the book.

Mainly the book is about alternative medicine. Suzanne questions these doctors in California and they answer her questions. The book is what they told her, plus she makes a major study of health issues. That's why she looks so good (and maybe a little plastic surgery--why not? If I had the money, I would have some, too!).

Wealth of information

I am a registered nurse and have spent many hours reading and re-reading sections of this book. For all the wonderful new medical breakthroughs out there, there are also some that are outdated and "broken". Money unfortunately has distorted some. Suzanne Somers is a brave pioneer and I appreciate that someone has finally come forward with the truth about our current health system. I have passed this book on to those I love in hopes that they take responsibility for their own health and become proactive supporting alternative medicine. Read the obits every morning. People are dying much too young.

This "breakthrough" needs fixing

Ms. Somers has taken an important subject and made it unnecessarily complicated and perhaps inappropriate/impossible for the average reader. If one were to follow her "breakthrough" recommendations, they would be spending much of their life detoxing, eating organic fruits and vegetables(and little else), exercising, getting lymphatic massages, having their root canals and fillings extracted, getting their electrical currents measured, setting aside blood for future stem cell needs(at $7500 a pop), having chelation therapy, taking HGH shots, and eliminating all foods that provide a modicum of pleasure in todays world.

Much of what is stated is important and helpful, but a true wellness book should have been more definitive about people getting off medications. A true wellness physician should be able to eliminate all medications that his/her patients are on. This is achieved by eliminating the causation of illness, a subject that is not covered in this book. There are many people who have difficulty sleeping, have restless leg syndrome, anger issues, road rage, fibromyalgia(which is not an auto-immune disorder or an inflammatory condition as stated in the book), depression or IBS from internalization of anger, hypertension, a problem with excessive drinking,or smoking, or drugs in order to "chill out", anxiousness-type feelings, bipolar disorders, excess cortisol production leading to weight gain, chronic interstitial cystitis, etc. Every one of these conditions are caused by an over-production of a hormone that is scarcely mentioned in the book - adrenaline, the fight-or-flight hormone. The control of this hormone is imperative to achieving wellness; ironically, it is easy to do. Everyone of the conditions mentioned can often be eliminated by lowering the levels of this hormone.

I am a wellness physician and very much supportive of what Ms. Somers is trying to accomplish. It does not have to be complicated, it involves sitting down and talking to the patient, getting hormones in balance appropriately without unnessarily high doses of estrogen(or any at all since most women never stop making it),removing medications, an education in nutrition, and the correct use of supplements.

For the record I would like to clarify some statements in the book: Estrogen lowers IGF-1 levels. It is dangerous to use these levels as a guide to HGH dosage when taking estrogen(as does Ms. Somers).
Progesterone lowers insulin levels, it does not raise them.
Hgh is not an anti-aging hormone; insulin and IGF-1 speed up aging.
Testosterone does not lower cholesterol levels, but is certainly cardio-protective for both men and women.
In men, testosterone can easily convert into estradiol, the cause of prostate cancer. Perhaps some mention should have been made about how to prevent this conversion.
Migraine headaches are not "a classic response to low estrogen". They are caused by estrogen and are eliminated by progesterone cream.
"A backed-up gall bladder" is not the most common cause of headaches.

Suzanne Somers began her book with the same quotation that I ended mine with. My book begins with a quotation from Voltaire who stated that, "Doctors give drugs of which they know little/Into bodies of which they know less/For diseases of which they know nothing at all".

Steps Way Too Expensive!

This book contains such incredible information and is mostly right on when compared with other natural health books. If we could all apply these steps with consistency, there's no doubt that we'd all be a healthier people.

I could only give this book 2 stars though because there is absolutely NO WAY an average American can afford all these steps. Other reviewers have mentioned this as well. I wish there were things/ways she could suggest to be able to even attempt this kind of lifestyle. It is simply out of reach for anyone who is not wealthy. The detox therapies alone are thousands of $$$...

My husband and I have 2 daughters and the only steps we can realistically afford are the dietary and some of the supplements ones. We consulted with a couple doctors she recommends in the back of the book to see if our family could come in and be evalulated...the initial appointments would be $395 per person, not including blood work, tests and "other" screenings that insurance doesn't cover. We were looking at over $5,000 just to get in the door for everything. This of course just scratches the surface - we still need to actually get the hormones, detox therapies, supplements, etc. Although this book is full of great info, I can only give it 2 stars because really, it should have a disclaimor about how much all this actually costs. It's frustrating that healthier lifestyles are difficult to maintain without money.

She has her own yoga instructor come to her house, grows her own food, is in regular and direct contact with her doctors, has her own sauna...these things are totally out of reach for my lifestyle. I wish I could do everything but until my husband and I make more money (and our income isn't that bad now) there is no way the 4 of us can do most of this, and most of my friends agreed with me that they, too, would do more but simply can't. Stinks!

Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

Shocking Truths Disclosed!

Excellent book! This book will challenge modern day thinking on food and pharmaceuticals. Campbell is an educated researcher who astonishingly comes to the realization that modern concepts of a healthy diet are actually not based on fact and research. Our love affair with meat and dairy have some significant implications for our overall health. Well written, well researched. It is worth having in your personal library.

Good information, could have been shorter

This book offers a lot of good information. I thought it was interesting to read about so much good information about eating plant-based foods. However, the book is very long and drawn out, and a lot of it is written in a very dry manner. I think it could have been tightened more, dropping probably 75 pages or so since so much of the information repeats itself. A shorter more focused read would have made it go down easier. I still think the info and mission are good, I just think it would have been a smoother read had it been shorter, less repetitive and written in a little more interesting manner, rather than cut and dry science writing. Good info though...

Enlightening

I am so thankful that this book fell into my hands. As someone who loves learning about nutrition, I realize now that I have been assuming that the information we receive from the media is true and in our best interests. I find that when I try to talk to people about Dr. Campbell's alternative view to nutrition, they become highly defensive, even angry. We don't want to hear that what we have been taught for so long could possibly be wrong! Here in northern Europe, where we consume lots of dairy and meat products, we are increasingly suffering from cancers and heart disease. Many consider the Scandinavians to be the epitome of health, but I think this can only be credited to our highly active lifestyles.

If you dare to have an open mind to this book and use your own common sense, I think you will gain a fascinating perspective even if you choose not to make the changes recommended.

Most Comprehensive Nutrition Study Ever

This book is critical for anyone studying nutrition. Why China? Because of "such a massive variation in cancer rates among different counties when genetic backgrounds were similar from place to place" (p. 71). Quite simply, it leaves no doubt that genetics aren't involved, but rather environment.

Though I have read hundreds of books on nutrition, I was blown away by the research herein. I had already known dairy was bad, but Campbell's research makes it practically the major culprit for cancer! Apparently the casein, the main protein in cow's milk, "interacts with carcinogens, the way DNA reacts with carcinogens and the way cancerous cells grow" (p. 65) and actually "allows more carcinogens into cells" (p. 348). Milk does a tumor good! Although I still occasionally indulge in raw goat's cheese, I am much more conscious of this fact after reading his book.

While other researchers have implicated carbohydrates in cancer (especially high glycemic ones), Dr. Campbell devotes an entire chapter to blaming a diet too high in protein. He found that a diet 5% in protein could reverse cancer, and implicated a diet high in animal proteins as being especially carcinogenic. He recommends getting no more than 10% of your calories in protein, which is low by USA standards.
A vegetarian diet was found to be superior in forming muscle over the long run ("slow and steady wins the race") as well as in allowing people to consume many more calories than omnivores, without getting fat.

Campbell also takes on big pharma and the food industries, leaving no doubt that their recommendations to us are purely for their profit.
My editor e-mailed Dr. Campbell to inquire as to whether any of the animal proteins eaten in the study were raw. Apparently not, he replied. It might have made a difference in the meat (since cooked meat forms carcinogenic heterocyclic amines if heated enough), but honestly: even raw dairy contains casein!

Great Book!

I was looking for something that had South Beach as I had wanted to try it. This book has it all. The food guide is great as well as all the recipes included for each phase. There's also a question and answer section and you can pick and choose what section to read as it applies to you. There's also a workout section - I haven't used that - but if you don't have your own workout system - this one seems easy to do. Explanations for why you eat what you eat are helpful as well. All in all - great value for the money.

Finally! Relief from stomach distress and inflammation!

I was recommended to this book from my naturopath. I have suffered almost three years with chronic stomach distress, inflammation, and all around random stomach aches. I always ate extremely healthy, unprocessed foods, worked out, etc but no doctor ever was able to heal my stomach. After hearing about the diet, I picked up every book D'adamo wrote and started my education.

As an "A" type, my new diet was extremely different from the strict, limited high protein diet I lived on. Also, most of my daily staples (tomatoes, yams, cabbage, splenda, bananas, etc) were now on the avoid list. I revamped my eating, introduced new and different grains, veggies, fruits, beans, and occasional dairy into my diet and immediately felt better than ever before. In two weeks, I have no more stomach aches, not that constant nagging feeling. As a side effect, I also lost three pounds in my first two weeks (pretty big deal for someone my size because I only had maybe 5-8 to lose total).

I'll update this review as more time passes, but I must say, in just two weeks I'm blown away by this book. I owe my naturopath and Dr. D'adamo a huge thanks!

Happily eating "A" and living comfortably!

Rating :

Worst pseudoscience ever

The author is a naturopath who claims he can heal people through diets designed to fit 4 blood types (A, B, 0, AB). If this were the thesis of this book, I would simply accept the author's word for it. Many non-conventional doctors use different media and methods to convey their healing abilities and, while the real nature of their systems baffles scientific analysis, fact is that they can heal. Unfortunately the author reached great success by stitching a delirious "scientific" theory around his thesis. I'll be expressing only few major critiques.

1) The evidence he presents to support his thesis is 100% circumstantial. About a third of the book sounds like this : "John, who was suffering for this and that, came to my office. After putting him on the right diet, his symptoms reverted or regressed". Circumstantial evidence can be used as a starting point but it cannot be used to prove a theory, nonetheless the author sells his theories as if they were the Gospel
2) D'Adamo states that group 0 is the blood group of hunters-gatherers. The group A are the farmers and the group B are the nomads. Well, this is not true. Go in the data bank and look for yourself. As an example, you'll notice that very many hunters-gatherers (Inuit and Ainu among others) have a lower group 0 incidence than peoples who have been farmers for millennia. The only major hunter-gatherer population fitting his scenario is the American Indian (both North and South). Amerindians were bottlenecked during their migration from Kamchatka to Alaska. Obviously, concepts like "genetic drift" are alien to the author.
3) Nowhere in the scientific literature could one find any of his "studies" he claimed were being wrapped up at the time of publication
4) The auhtor's knowledge of the biochemistry of lectins, albeit seemingly sound to most people, is primitive and incomplete. He is not just trying to keep it simple: he dismisses or ignores everything that may hinder his "truth".
5) For D'Adamo's theory to be valid, food lectins must remain functionally intact through the stomach, the intestine and, in many cases, the cooking process. Moreover they should remain invisible to the immune system. This is frankly hard to believe. The author states that lectins do in fact survive digestion (no prove or literature is presented on this) and completely ignores the host immune reaction.
Again, I am not questioning that D'Adamo may have the ability to heal people, however the "scientific" foundation on which this entire book is based is beyond weak: it is simply delirious.

Wheat bread is always a good way to go. Beans are also high in fiber as well. There is actually fiber powder you can buy at the grocery store and mix into water that's colorless and tasteless that will help with food cravings. It also can be mixed into certain foods as well.

Question : What foods are high in fiber for a 3 year old?
What high fiber foods can I feed my son & what foods to avoid?? My doctor gave me a list but it was contradicting. It said avoid potatoes & then eat potatoes. It also said avoid rice, but eat brown rice. Also we are puerto rican so we eat alot of white rice & red or pink beans. Is that good or bad? Thank you all!

Answer:
Excellent sources of fiber are fruits and veggies, especially the skins (on those you can eat), as well as WHOLE grains. Brown rice has more fiber than white rice, so try to switch to that if you're trying to increase fiber in your diet. You should be able to find brown rice, for about the same price as white, at just about any grocery store. Red beans are a good source of fiber, as are pink beans. Potatoes offer some, as well [some types more than others]. But, definitely try to incorporate other fruits veggies into your diet wherever you can--they offer much more than just fiber. And, now is a crucial time to teach your son to eat well and eat fruits and veggies.

Question : What cat food is high in fiber for cat that gets constipated?
I have a cat that gets constipated often. He has been at the vet several times for it and has had enemas. I noticed that the canned food that he eats has lowered the fiber content. What canned food has a high fiber content that I can switch him to? I have 3 other cats so I prefer to first try a food that is not a prescription food.

Answer:
Have you spoken to the vet about any drugs that would help him? Constipated cats can be helped greatly by one or both of the following: lactulose and cisipride (Propulsid). When an all-canned diet isn't enough, then it could be time to add one of the two laxatives. It really isn't pleasant for a cat to get constipated and get enemas, and these drugs can help very much. Has the vet done x-rays to determine if he's got a condition called megacolon? Something you might want to mention at your next trip to the vet.

Question : my husband has internal hemorrhoids frequently blood passes in his stool inspite of taking high fiber food.?

Answer:
It is just possible he may be having some other problem than hemorrhoids? I would like to advise you to consult a good surgeon. He will do P/R and proctoscopy to make sure that there is no other problem. There are some very important causes for bleeding, that should be ruled out.

Question : fiber suplement 4 dogs or a really high fiber food any recommendations?
my vet rec a high fiber sup b/c he gets colitis alot due to my sneaky children giving him table food my vet rec a high fiber sup b/c he gets colitis alot due to my sneaky children giving him table food

Answer:
Before I can answer....why are you wanting to know. updated 1-11-07 Some cases of colitis are due to food sensitivities. To find out if this is the case, a trial diet consisting entirely of ingredients that your dog has never eaten before can be fed for several weeks ( at least 3 weeks, preferably 6 to 8 weeks). A number of commercial diets are made for this purpose, including Science diet I/D (I keep this on stock for diarehea) ,Eukanuba Low Residue Canine (adult) diet, Purina LA and HA (tm) diets, Hill's d/d (tm) diets, Innovative Diets (various types, such as duck and potato) and Waltham Limited Antigen (tm) diets. Be mindful that when you switch a dogs food do it slowly and casually by mixing old and new or you will be steam cleaning your carpets to get rid of the stains. There are several types of immune mediated chronic colitis in dogs. Please consult your vet. There is lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis, eosinophilic colitis, histiocytic-ulcerative colitis and granulomatous colitis are some of the names of these conditions. The two most commonly recommended medications for immune mediated colitis are sulfasalazine (Azulfidine Rx) and prednisone. Sulfasalazine is recommended most commonly for lymphocytic/plasmacytic colitis and prednisone for eosinophilic and granulomatous colitis. It is acceptable to use metronidazole (Flagyl Rx) as a substitute for sulfasalazine and tylosin also works sometimes. Metronidazole is used very long term for some conditions and it doesn't seem to cause problems with long term use. Just so you know. If it works, dietary control of colitis is best, because side effects are not likely. After that, using the medications that work is the best approach. Since you and your vet have found a combination of medications that work, I'd want to go with that approach until it didn't work or until enough time had gone by with control of the diarrhea that it seemed reasonable to cut back on the medications to see if the problem had resolved. Your vet can help you figure out when it might be reasonable to do that. If for some reason you have any of these meds. CONSULT YOUR VET FOR DOSAGE. A normal dosage for a human can kill a big dog. Do not give your dog any meds with out consulting you vet.
