TEDIOUS!
THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A REALLY GOOD 100 PAGE BOOK, INSTEAD IT WAS A TEDIOUS READ AT 300 PAGES. THE FIRST 170 PAGES WERE ABOUT THE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF DIGESTION. SOME OF THIS WAS VERY INTERESTING AND RELATIVE BUT COULD HAVE BEEN CONDENSED INTO ABOUT 20 PAGES. I ALSO HAD TROUBLE WITH THE WRITING. ADDING SOME LIGHTHEARTED LEVITY TO AN OTHERWISE DRY SUBJECT IS A GOOD THING BUT THEY THREW A STUPID JOKE INTO EVERY PARAGRAPH. IT FELT INSULTING TO ME AFTER AWHILE. I REALLY ENJOY THEIR SHOWS ON OPRAH BUT CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.
Rating :
Ugh. Insulting and trite.
Fortunately, I checked this out from the library instead of spending money on it. I couldn't even manage to read it, let alone figure out what they were trying to suggest.
I found the constant insulting analogies extremely off-putting. Really, if you're trying to encourage people to lose weight and let go of the all-or-nothing beliefs that lead many people to give up after the first slip, then you should reconsider slipping an insult into every other sentence.
Absolute junk. Send your copy straight to the recycle bin.

The Basics Here Are All You Need To Know
"You: On A Diet" was on the bestseller list for such a long time it catches one's curiosity. Books on the best-seller list for so long are probably good. If something is on the top-100 for a long, long, time, it's got to be useful if people are willing to spend their income to buy and read it.
After thumbing through "You: on a diet" in a big bookstore, I sat down on a stool and browsed (perused) it a little more, and caved in. I bought it, even though a lot of info on these health topics were stored within my long-term memory banks, as middle age approaches me. One of the many things that makes this book importantly useful, is the way the information is presented, and how you can quickly look something up in the index to find the info you're looking for.
When you go to a bookstore, simply look at the Diet/Health section. The shelves are bulging with every conceivable "diet" you can think of. Because of the declining health of so many in the US and age demographics, the health & diet genre is a large and profitable industry. And, the industry is primarily a crass attempt to make money. There's a lot of redundancy, fads, and garbage. "Live healthy, lose weight, get fit, live longer, look the way you want, reverse aging, make your skin bright, feel young again," etc.
As usual, the Pareto Principle applies: it seems about 20% of the books are worthy and about 80% below average, or poor. You can tell within minutes of browsing these books. With so many dry and mundane "health-diet," books out there, "You on a diet" is one of the best because 1. the information is succinct and sound, and 2. more importantly is *how* this info is presented. Readers don't need to know the specific details of anatomy and physiology to know how to reduce blood pressure or cholesterol. Just the basics will do.
Waist width (large waists), or the "waist-to-hip ratio" is linked to many diseases and poor health conditions.
If I'm going to read about the bad of LDL (low-density lipo-protein) and the good of HDL of (high-density lipo-protein) give me a good analogy: the "bucket man" is brief and to the point. Cool drawing, too.
The 3 times a week twenty minutes of stretching and floor exercises, seems designated for seniors, honestly, and that's OK.
But in addition the the presentation style, is the basic information itself. The info is based on facts and scientific research. For those that already have this knowledge, "You: on a diet" can be a brush up. The index is easy and quick to use.

Solid Info, Great Delivery
If there is a diet out there, I've tried it. This is the most comprehensive and yet understandable diet book out there. Everyone is different, and this book takes that into account. It doesn't beat you up, but gives you the tools needed to work with your limitations, such as genetics, hormones, etc. Identifies causes of weight problems that I've never heard before. THE best diet book out there. And I have a huge bookcase full of diet books that didn't work.

THE BIGGEST LOSER COOKBOOK More than 125 Healthy, Delicious Recipes Adapted from NBC'S Hit Show
By Chef Devin Alexander, et al
(picture jacket here)
A review by Marty Martindale
The whole Biggest Loser concept is good, it seems, for these times, in that they have dealt with not only the food and its recipes, but a pyramid, general instruction for good sense and several graded workouts with Bob Harper and students on CD. This is a good program for these times when weight seems a problem for too many.
The Biggest Loser Diet is "calorie-controlled, carbohydrate-modified, fat-reduced and high in protein (which controls hunger.)" They want you to eat three meals and two snacks each day. "The 4-3-2-1 Biggest Loser Pyramid" is four tiers, the base, or largest is fresh fruits and vegetables, the next level is protein foods, seafood, cheese, beans, fish and yogurt. The second from the top level is whole grains, your breads, cereals and wheat pasta. The top level, or "The Extras" are sweets with a 200 calorie daily limit. They have an equation for your calorie quota: if you weigh between 150 and 300, multiply your weight by seven, and this is the number of calories you should keep your maximum to. Some simple pointers: No white potatoes, limit amount of starchy vegetables such as pumpkin, winter squash, sweet potatoes and yams. Avoid dry fruits. Choose whole fruits over juices. Vary your proteins and limit red meat servings to two a week. Avoid processed cold cuts. There's a few more guidelines, but nothing too restrictive, really common sense.
They divide the recipe section into Breakfasts, Hearty Snacks, Sandwiches-Soups-Stews, Sides & Salads, Main Courses and Sweet Snacks. Here's some examples:
MANGO STRAWBERRY BREAKFAST SUNDAE: Calls for orange juice, ice cubes, honey and high-fiber, low-sugar cereal
SUNRISE OATMEAL: Orange juice, oats, blueberries, water and orange extract
BRIAN'S BREAKFAST SCRAMBLE: Green bell pepper, onion, tomato, egg whites, and Cheddar cheese
COCKTAIL-HOUR TUNA TARTARE: Mango, cucumber, lime juice, cilantro, green onions and sesame oil
JESSICA'S "THE RANCH" BLT WRAP: Turkey bacon, wheat tortilla, Galeo's Miso Caesar Dressing, lettuce and tomato
PB & J SPIRALS: Wheat flour tortilla, peanut butter and strawberry all-fruit spread
PAM'S COTTAGE CHEESE MARINARA: Cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese and spaghetti sauce
JEN'S ASPARAGUS GUACAMOLE: Add sour cream, guacamole seasoning mix and tomato.
INDIAN CHICKEN SALAD POCKETS: Mayonnaise, lime juice, curry paste, cucumber, red onion, wheat pita and lettuce
MATT'S GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH: Rye bread, Cheddar cheese and oil spray
PARMESAN-PEPPER SWEET POTATO FRIES: Olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne and ketchup, if desired.
DANA'S SPINACH AND FETA BROWN RICE: Onion, garlic and feta cheese.
PARMESAN-ROASTED CAULIFLOWER: Parsley, garlic powder and olive oil
FRESH AND COLORFUL JICAMA SLAW: Cucumber, carrots, cilantro, lime juice, olive oil and red pepper flakes
BROCCOLI SALAD WITH SWEET VINAIGRETTE: Orange juice, plain yogurt, mustard, orange marmalade and red onion
HOT AND COLD BROWN-RICE SALAD: Chicken, broccoli florets, bell pepper, red onion, Italian dressing, and balsamic vinegar
DARI'S PICANTE CHICKEN: Picante sauce, cream cheese and Cheddar cheese
HEATHER'S MEXICAN ROLLUP: Ground turkey, extra-lean, wheat tortilla, sour cream, romaine, tomato and salsa
ANGEL HAIR WITH ROCKIN' RED CLAM SAUCE: Onion, garlic, baby clams, tomatoes, oregano, olive oil, red-pepper flakes and Parmesan cheese
ICED BUFFED MOCHA: Powdered coffee, chocolate soy milk, vanilla yogurt, Splenda, fat-free whipped topping and cocoa powder
RASAH AND EDWIN'S WARM GRAPEFRUIT DESSERT: Add ground cinnamon and bake.
TIFFANY'S CANDIED ALMONDS: Butter spray, almonds, cinnamon and Splenda
In a world where too many are jeopardizing their health by carrying too much weight, the whole Biggest Loser program, the exercises, advice and recipies are well worth considering.

I had doubts but healthy really can taste amazing!!!
Wow!! So far I've made at least 10 dishes from this cookbook and I am really impressed!! The ingredients are usually very easy to find and for the most part each recipe only requires a few ingredients. The recipes are mostly made for 1-4 servings which is convenient if you are single or if you are just cooking healthy for yourself and not for your whole family. I have been scaling the recipes up (if necessary) to make enough for my whole family and they are just as impressed by the meals even though they aren't trying to lose weight!! Since eating more wholesome meals I feel more full, more energetic and and just better overall.

Biggest Loser Cookbook has great recipes, my husband eats them.
This cookbook is great and provided me with great stuff for my husband and I to eat. Trying to get Coach D to eat healthy is kinda hard. So if I fill him up on these great dishes, maybe I can keep him healthy. Most of the recipes are easy and quick to fix.

Good Book
I haven't really tried many recepies in this cookbook. I'm a really picky eater so this cookbook doesn't really help me. But I stil thought some of the recepies had some really good ideas.

Helped me lose 15 pounds
This book is awesome! I was working out at the gym and eating pretty well, but I was losing about a pound or a pound and a half per month. I read "Making the Cut" and followed the workout routine while counting my calories. In that month I went from 211 lbs to 204 lbs. The circuit training described in this book has really opened my eyes as to what kind of training is possible and I will never go back to just sitting around and lifting weights.
Be sure to check out Jillian's Podcasts of her radio show on the internet (KFI 640am).
-Good Luck

Good for short-term weight loss; not intended for long-term maintenance
I recently bought this book from Barnes and Noble but am planning to return it. It's not a bad book at all -- in fact, it helped me to understand how I eat and metabolize my food -- but the book is designed for SHORT-TERM weight loss, not long-term maintenance (which is what I'm looking for). If you've got a 10-year high school reunion, wedding, or important event coming up and you want to drop 20 lbs. within 30 days, this is the book for you. (I'd also recommend Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred in conjunction with this for maximum and effective weight loss.)
I should also note here -- and she says this in her book, if you are looking to lose more than 20 lbs, you need to look elsewhere on advice on how to do that (she recommends her other book mentioned below). Making the Cut is only a temporary weight loss solution.
However, for those of you looking to lose weight and keep it off, this is NOT the book you are looking for. Instead I'd recommend Michaels' other book, Winning by Losing: Drop the Weight, Change Your Life or assistance from any of the other Biggest Loser books:
*The Biggest Loser Fitness Program: Fast, Safe, and Effective Workouts to Target and Tone Your Trouble Spots--Adapted from NBC's Hit Show!, *The Biggest Loser: The Weight Loss Program to Transform Your Body, Health, and Life--Adapted from Hit Show!, *The Biggest Loser Cookbook: More Than 125 Healthy, Delicious Recipes Adapted from NBC's Hit Show.
As I said, it's a great book that provides some great tips. I'd recommend it to people who want to quickly -- and temporarily -- get in shape and look good, but it's not a book designed for consistent, long-term use.

Bring on Deployment with You!
Jillian's book is awesome! I'm a female Marine who ordered this book while in Afghanistan and was able to do the 30 day plan over the space of the last 50 days of my deployment; I didn't have a lot of time, and I also didn't do much cardio at all either. I also had limited access to a gym, but I improvised the machine exercises with dumb-bells by simulating the same range of movement. I lost 10 pounds and got cut, and gained strength overall. I've been pretty busy since I got back and haven't exercised but 3 times in the last 3 weeks and I still have the body (I'm eating right which helps). I'm very impressed by Jillian's workouts - the plyometrics and combination weight exercises made me sweat hard and tightened me up in all the right places. This book is great for women who only have 45-60 minutes a day to exercise and who want a dramatic body change! Her pictures and descriptions of the exercises were very helpful. I made little index cards which I brought to the gym with me (instead of the big book). I didn't follow the menu, but instead just avoided sweets and processed foods, and I am very happy with the change in my health and body. Great book to bring on deployment!!
Rating :
The best book with the greatest reward!
I would recommend this book to anyone who really is motivated to change their appearance. I've tried many different fitness plans and they all reverted to the same thing: no change. Jillian really gives you the tools you need and a guided 30 day plan of eating, exercise, and motivation. It's was very easy to follow and she only has you become more aware of what you are eating by reading labels and learning what is put into your food. I have continued exercising even after reaching a weight loss goal of 18 pounds in 30 days. I also continue avoiding the "fat" foods discussed in the book. It has motivated my co-workers and my family! I'm leaner everywhere and can see it with my own eyes. I dropped 6 sizes! My body is sculpted in places I've been trying to improve for a long time. Buy this book...there will be NO regrets!

A MUST-READ FOR BABY-BOOMERS
Baby Boomers are quickly losing memory and health. This book directs you on how to identify areas of "aging" and what to do to take control of your health in that area. Many of us are concerned about our health, and all the horrible alternatives we have under the influence of the mega-laboratories. This book gives us hope.

Would You Like To Look And Feel Younger?
From: BasilAndSpice.com
Don't we all wish to not just appear younger, but to also feel younger?
Younger You promises to help the reader unlock the hidden power of your brain to look and feel 15 years younger. The author, Eric R. Braverman, M.D. is the director of the Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH) Medical Center in New York. Younger You has received positive comments from notable doctor-authors: Nicholas Perricone, Isadore Rosenfeld, and David Perlmutter.
Younger You is broken into 6 parts:
1. Your ageprint--you're only as old as your oldest part. Disease occurs in stages so catch problems early with suggested ultrasounds for proper treatment. Braverman recommends the usage of bioidentical hormones; supplementation--zinc, fish oil, and others; follow a diet rich in fruits and vegetables; exercise. This section includes ageprint quizzes to help the reader identify problems within the body and begin him on the path to wellness. 2. Your brain as the key--lack of dopamine, a brain-produced chemical, lowers energy, affecting the rest of the body. Braverman explains the correlation between the brain and obesity, offering several possibilities of solution. The seven stages of cognitive decline, the loss of GABA, and the relation of Serotonin to happiness are pointed out and effective methods to counter undesirable conditions are discussed. 3. The overworked cardiovascular system--referred to as "cardiopause" by Braverman, it is the slowing and aging of the heart. An estimated 700,000 Americans will have a heart attack this year. Braverman asserts that the condition can be reversed. The top five risk factors include family history, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol. 4. The modulating systems--includes thyropause (the weakening of metabolism), immunopause (the inability to fight infection) 5. Aging Sexuality--relates to, hormones, menopause for women and andropause for men. 6. Your Aging Frame: Bones, Muscles, and Skin--bone and muscle loss are not inevitable, but must be addressed instead.
Key concepts of Younger You:
* Conventional medicine is equivalent to an assembly line, only viewing parts of the body for treatment, rather than using an integrative whole-person approach. * Virtually all illness and disease can be detected from the outside. * When one part of the body fails, it signals an aging code to the rest of the body, which responds in kind. * Each part of the body has markers for aging. These are the warning signs. * Diagnostic testing pinpoints the aging code of every organ.
Throughout Younger You, Braverman shows the reader which natural supplements and their dosages will help for each condition/disease. He also suggests new research to support testing. A good example from p. 166 "Minor leaks of protein in your urine (albuminuria) is an early indicator of stroke or heart attack." Interspersed, Braverman also refers to various types of food, explaining how certain foods benefit or harm the body.
Considered to be a book about wellness, Younger You is also about antiaging. It represents recent discoveries in research which can be directly applied for life-saving benefits. Younger You helps the reader find out what his/her real bodily age is and understand how to act on this knowledge.
Just released as a paperback, Younger You has been made more affordable for everyone to reap the benefits of Dr. Eric R. Braverman's knowledge.

Question : Can anyone give me more info on the high-fiber diet?

Thanks!!
Answer:
it does help keep you feeling full...I recently lost 30+ pounds and I kept high fiber...it really helped me control cravings....most important thing for loosing weigtht....write EVERYTHING you eat down and total it up for the day....post its work great for this....you need to see how many actual calories you are eating. thats the ONLY way.

Question : My doctor put me on a low cholesterol and high fiber diet, any suggestions?
My doctor put me on a low cholesterol and high fiber diet, any suggestions?
Answer:
For a high fiber diet, you want to eat alot of fruits. Peanut Butter is a good source of fiber, but be sure to check the labels, some are higher in fiber than others. Also, swiching from white bread to wheat. Wheat bread has alot more fiber, but again be sure to check the labels. Raisins are a good source. There are alot of things out there with fiber. Check all the labels to be sure though.
|
Question : Would a high fiber diet help me lose weight?
Or any other ideas? I can't seem to keep a diet and i think i'm just going all wrong about it. What has worked for someone else?
Answer:
Indirectly, yes. Fiber helps to fill you up, so eats lots of it before your main course at meal times and you should be eating less. That will, in turn, help you loose weight.
|
Question : Why does a high fiber diet lower blood pressure?
I already know that a high fiber, low sodium, and low fat diet lowers your blood pressure. DUH. What I can't seem to find is the reasons these things are true. I'm writing a paper on blood pressure and I've found so many great sources, but not one of them tells me the actual physiological reasons that this type of diet lowers blood pressure. If anyone could point me to some sources on this I would really appreciate it. Any doctors out there??? : )
Answer:
The reason is that fiber diet maintains the normal motility of intestines and forms a layer on the mucosa so that fat and other stuffs are not absorbed in the body; and are expelled out during defecation.
This is a strong hypothesis.

Question : Kashi Go Lean High FIber Diet causing Gas?
About 2 weeks ago I tried this new cereal from Kashi. It's a High Fiber cereal. After a few days of eating about 2 bowls a day I noticed I was getting a lot of gas.I know it may sound gross but it's something I wanted to learn more about.
I know that a High Fiber diet will lead to more gas but how long will it take for my body to get used to High Fiber and stop producing so much gas? Or does a High Fiber diet always cause Gas?
Thanks.
Answer:
That Kashi stuff is hard-core, like for vegan-feminists and similar species. Next thing you know, you'll be wearing unbleached organic cotton and wearing a shoulder bag you bought at a flea market in Santa Cruz.
Anyway...yeah, switching to a high fiber diet often causes gas, if you're not used to it. It could take awhile for you to get used to it, anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. Eating some yogurt each day should help quiet your tummy. Either that, or start hitting those McNuggets and Snickers bars again.

Question : high fiber diet for weight loss?
can you lose weight on a high fiber diet
Answer:
you should be taking more than 35g of fiber a day.
as a component of food, fiber isn't absorbed by the body: therefore it dosent contribute calories. that's why high fiber foods such as whole grains, veggies, legumes and fruit -usually lower in calories - are included in weight loss diets. their high fiber content makes theses diets quite filling so you might eat less overall.
very high fiber diets also may some up short on protein foods. an excessively high fiber diet can cause constipation and dehydration if extra fluids aren't consumed.
bulk fillers, which are high in fiber aren't advised. they reduce hunger by first absorbing liquid then swelling up in the stomach. these products can be harmful when they obstruct the digestive tract.
moderation of dietary fiber as part of an overall healthful diet is a smarter approach to weight loss. adding fiber to a healthful weight loss plan - one that doesn't go below 1600cal/day - is a smart idea.
|
Question : Can I lose weight by going on a high fiber diet?
I know high fiber diets are to prevent constipation and lower cholesterol(sp?), But can it help me lose weight? with exercise, of course.
Answer:
Yes it most definitely can! Just don't eat a lot of other junk that will hurt your efforts. Eliminate fast food. Substitute fruit for sweets. Forget that white flour and sugar exist. You will find SO many things you love. Of course have a pizza and some ice cream for a treat once in a great while but for your regular eating patterns, stick with the healthy stuff. Eat more than you do now.......just make sure most of your plate is filled with vegetables and fruit....keep meat to a minimum and eat only a small amount of healthy fat like olive oil (our brains need SOME fat to function properly )

Question : Super high fiber diet for weight loss?
I recently saw a program on public television for the fiber 35 diet. The diet appealed to me because 1) I eat a lot of vegetables/high fiber foods anyway and 2) the diet's creator claims that eating 35 or more grams of fiber per day causes your body to burn a couple hundred calories just by processing the fiber. I've been on the diet only 2 weeks and have gotten past the nightmare cramping, bloating and *ahem* constant gas expulsion, but I'm wondering if this will really work in the long run. I've read some consumer reviews on the fiber 35 diet and wonder if the rave reviews of losing tons of weight are really true. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm on this diet primarily to lose weight and secondarily to preserve my health with healthy eating. In a typical day I eat a couple bags of frozen vegetables (broccoli, corn, etc.), a can of lentil or black bean soup, red beans & rice, oranges, and oatmeal or bran cereal. No meat, which is a new thing for me!
Answer:
Due to a health problem, my doctor perscribed a high fiber diet a year ago. I have followed it strictly...no change in exercise or anything and lost 10 lbs (I was not overweight, just a couple extra lbs) in the last year. I would say increasing your fiber would definitely help you loose extra weight and keep you healthy.
