Dated Material

I thought that I would like this book given the reviews that I read, but after getting it I relaized that the information seemed very dated. The copyright of book is 1992. Some of the information on specific health issues has changed or doesn't take into account some current science on the issues. There is more that is understood about digestive health almost 10 years later and far more interesting reads. I returned it to Amazon.

I have life to look forward to again

If a person WANTS to get well - at all costs except another Doctor's visit, this book is invaluable. I was looking forward to the next 40 years in misery fighting chronic pain. This book was a great help in discovering what I needed to do to stop the cycle. I'm still sticking with green juice until I know for sure everything I can or cannot tolerate, but there is definitely a light at the end of my tunnel! I've been seriously jucing since January 6th and I have been able to get off all meds. Green juice actually nips my migraines in the bud and have not had one develop since January 6th.

Editorial Review :

When it comes to food, nature provides a wealth of delicious choices. But each one also supplies unique health benefits. From apples to yogurt, this comprehensive encyclopedia of power foods from top nutritionist David Grotto proves that what tastes good can also be good for you—and tells you why. Did you know...

• A handful of tart cherries before bed can help you sleep better
• Hot peppers may fight skin cancer
• Potatoes may reduce the risk of stroke
• Grape juice may be as heart-healthy as red wine
• Honey can help wounds heal faster

In working with thousands of clients over many years and searching for the most nutritious and tasty foods, David Grotto made a simple but profound discovery: telling people what they couldn’t eat was far less effective than telling them what they could. So began his list of power foods, rich in nutrients, loaded with disease-fighting antioxidants and important omega fats—and surprisingly more familiar than you might expect.

More than a reference book, 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life will make a significant impact on your health by guiding you to gradually add these foods to your diet. Plus, each entry includes a history of the food’s origin, therapeutic benefits along with scientific research, tips for use and preparation, and an appetizing recipe from a leading chef or nutritionist. Prepare to awaken your tastebuds, lose excess weight, and feel the healing begin.

TRUE HEALTHY CHOICES FOR CHANGE

101 foods that could save your life by David Grotto was the first book to tell it like it really is. My personal weight loss came from choosing food
ideas from this book. This is the first book for me that was so simple
and informative. I continue to refer to this book weekly to stay healthy
and keep the weight off.

A must have book

I have the Kindle version. All elements work as they should.

The book lists 101 individual fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, spices. Almost all are common everyday items with only a few that may not be in your local supermarkets such as goji berries (you can order via mail on Amazon for instance), amaranth (a grain), and teff (a grain from Ethiopia).

The only animal products listed are eggs, salmon, sardines, yogurt, and whey.

Each entry has an quote/saying/intro , history, where its grown, why you should eat it, highlights of its qualities, special pros and/or cons, home remedy uses, special food studies on it, how to select and store it, and sample receipes. The receipes are all very simple without exotic ingredients or special pans, etc. Included are number of calories, and amounts of grams of simple things like fats, vitamins, etc.

Highly entertaining, informative, engaging, eye opening. (don't peel your apples as the peel is where all the antioxidants are).

A wealth of information and all of it to your benefit. Simple and effective presentation.

There are two Appendix':

a) 2,000 calorie meal plan. (On the Kindle, the type is really small but can be read in good light.)

b) a listing of food qualities such as vitamins, nutrients, and phytochemicals, the foods you can find them in, and what are the specific benefits such as may be cancer fighting or may contribute to heart health, etc.

Very highly recommended.

Excellent- If your overweight and really not cheating on eating

This book helps a person understand the function of the thyroid. Most people do not understand how much this gland can effect every part of your body and book explains it in clear terms. Most doctors do not provide all the test needed to check your thyroid and this book helps you get a clear picture and ask the right questions to your doctor.

Help when your doctor ignores you

My assistant pastor's wife gave me this book because she had noticed so many of the symptoms in me. When I did the self-assessment, my score was almost the maximum number of points. It blew me away! I took a list of symptoms to my doctor (a page long, single-spaced!). He refused to even read it. (No, I will never see him again if I have any choice.) My TSH test numbers were "within the normal range." He said he would give me zoloft or paxil, but under no circumstances would he give me anything else. The other HMO doctor I saw said the same thing (he was at least civil about it and didn't treat me like a total idiot though). So, I had to pay out of pocket money that I don't really have to see a doctor outside the HMO who specializes in thyroid treatment. As it turns out, this is the top book on his recommended reading list to patients. He looked at my symptoms and test numbers (which I had insisted on knowing from my previous doctor) and said, "Yeah, you definitely have low thyroid." Surprise, surprise! Kudos to the Shameses for spotlighting research the established medical system has chosen to ignore. This has been unbelieveably helpful to me! My only complaint is the heavy emphasis on eastern mysticism.

SAVE your money!!

Don't waste your money on this book! The writing is too simplified and a bit patronizing. Having thyroid problems for over 12 years, I recommend these better books: "The Thyroid Sourcebook" by M. Sara Rosenthal and "The Everything Health Guide to Thyroid Disease" by Theodore Friedman MD. PHD.

I can't wait to see where it takes me

I just started this book three days ago but I am already excited about it. My book had a handwritten note from the author and I also received an email wishing me luck and offering support. Just the personal correspondence is great! I am on day 2 and, at the end of the 100 days, will be back to give a full review.

P.S. I have a blog wherein I chronicle my weight loss struggles as well as my daily life.

Highly recommended, appreciate her approach

I thought this was a very good book, with quick, easy, practical lessons. I found it motivating and insightful. Not every lesson resonated with me and I found some of the examples to be irritating and irrelevant, but I'm only one part of her audience and I'm sure those lessons and examples spoke to someone else. As far as the lessons go, you can do as much or as little as you want with them. Some days, I wrote a lot. Some days I wrote just a few sentences. If I missed a day, I just picked it up the next day. If you can't commit to that, I'm not sure if you're ready to commit to long-term weight loss or maintenance. The most important lessons, I think, are around managing long term weight loss. It really is a rest of your life challenge!

It's an OK book but...

I bought this book by accident I really wanted the complete third edition not a pocketbook size highlights book. I'd have returned it but it wasn't worth the effort. Buy the 776 page Third Edition - the fourth edition has a few pages more and is organized differently but I decided on the Third Edition (price was right.)

I was diasappointed in this and the "sister" book. I found no information on herbs I have used for my IBS. I also found the layout of both books confusing. I was hoping for a complete list of all herbal products, their uses, contraindications, and dosages for maximum efficacy. I would have returned it, but needed it for a gift that week.

Question : What are high fiber foods if someone has Diverticulosis and Ulcer's?
My mom's wondering, and I want to know high fiber foods since she has Diverticulosis, but only foods that are also safe to eat that won't cause pain in her stomach since she has Ulcer's. Dr Q I want to know more detail, as in what type of fiber jar you mean. And that product you listed, the site won't show it. Thanks for your great answer :)

Answer:
Hi, Great Question..With colon problems on the rise due to not eating right, this is an excellent question..Diverticulosis is one of many results of an unhealthy colon..Our colon can become clogged due to eating too much meat, flour containing foods, white bread, and pork, and most of all from not drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day..Pork food is trully unhealthy for the colon..Having a clogged colon can cause other problems such as gas, migraine headaches, skin rashes, bad breath, portruding abdomin, and etc..For best results your mother should Purchase a jar of fiber, because the body does not know the difference between grain fiber, and fiber from food..Fiber can fill in the pockets of the colon to help her heal..I have found a product that not only help the colon to eliminate waste, but it also has fiber that help cleanses the colon walls.. look up drnatura fiber..You can find it cheaper on ebay

Question : What foods do you recommend for a high fiber diet?
I am dealing with hemorrhoids, and I'm only twenty two, but they have gotten pretty bad. As a result, i'm trying to eat a high fiber diet. Usually it consists of --apples and pears --triscuits --raisin bran/raisin nut bran --oatmeal --whole grain pasta Can anyone tell me what foods they eat that help them increase fiber in their diet? I know that regular fruits and veggies should do the trick, but its not in this case. I am going to see my doctor tomorrow, because its gotten so bad, but whether or not i have to have it surgically removed, I am still going to need a high fiber diet. It would be great if there were any snack foods you could suggest that I could munch on throughout the day. I guess you could say I'm looking for very high fiber foods in particular. A super fiber food (if you will). Any suggestions? The more specific the better. Thanks!

Answer:
Be careful about suddenly increasing your daily fiber intake. If you suddenly add large amounts of fiber to your diet, you may experience bloating, diarrhea, and severe stomach cramping. It is best to add fiber to your diet gradually, eating small amounts of fiber rich foods. Additional fiber can be added slowly until you are consuming a healthy amount. Tips for Eating Fiber * Eat a variety of foods * Do not completely rely on fiber supplements * Limit your intake of processed foods * Increase your fiber intake gradually * Try to consume 25 to 35 grams of fiber every day Types of Fiber There are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibers dissolve in water. Soluble fibers include: pectin, guar, carrageenan, gums, mucilage, and oat bran. Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibers include cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Question : Does anyone know some high fiber foods that are easy to take on the go?
I am always running around, between school and work, and I need to find something that is high in fiber that I can just grab and snack on while in the car. Thanks for any help! Actually I am right, it is "fiber". You are thinking of the word "fibber" which is a liar. I looked it up in the dictionary. There is no such thing as "fibre" I'm sorry, I'm in America and we say "fiber".

Answer:
By the way, if you were from England then you will eat 'fibre' in your automovile in your way to a Cricket game. For quick snacks it is hard to beat dried foods like apricots, dates or raisins. Fresh fruit like orange, apple or pears can make an excellent snack. Don't forget or be afraid of almonds, for snacks. Pack with fiber but also good fats and minerals. If you have time to prepare food, then I would recommend baking your own muffins with whole wheat flour. I make mine and add wheat bran or oatmeal bran or flaxseed. Great source of fibre and nutrition are the legumes, like lentils, beans, garbanzo (chickpeas for you English!) Mix your legumes with brown rice and you'll have a great meal loaded with fiber and complete protein. Another great source of fiber are avocados. I enjoy them sliced between whole wheat sandwiches. In a coffee grinder I prepare a mix of flaxseed, almonds and sunflower seeds. This is loaded with a lot of good nutrition and fiber. I use this to sprincle on anything from yogurt, cereal, smoothies, salsas, etc. I put it in a little baggy and have it handy in places like the office, etc.

Answer:

Question : What cat food is high in fiber for cat that gets constipated?
I have a cat that gets constipated often. He has been at the vet several times for it and has had enemas. I noticed that the canned food that he eats has lowered the fiber content. What canned food has a high fiber content that I can switch him to? I have 3 other cats so I prefer to first try a food that is not a prescription food.

Answer:
Have you spoken to the vet about any drugs that would help him? Constipated cats can be helped greatly by one or both of the following: lactulose and cisipride (Propulsid). When an all-canned diet isn't enough, then it could be time to add one of the two laxatives. It really isn't pleasant for a cat to get constipated and get enemas, and these drugs can help very much. Has the vet done x-rays to determine if he's got a condition called megacolon? Something you might want to mention at your next trip to the vet.

Question : Any yummy but high in fiber foods you can think of?
I have decided I need more fiber in my meals, but anything high in fiber doesn't taste that great. For example, most cereals that are high in fiber don't have any taste. Can you think of any food or meal plans that are high in fiber but delicious too? Thanks.

Answer:
Bran muffins with ginger are so gorgeous.

Question : What kind of food has a high fiber content? Usually available in grocery stores?
I was grocery shopping today and I was in a sea of sugary, prepackaged junk food! tho there WERE fresh vegetables and produce, but what can i buy so that i'll be consuming foods with more fibers?

Answer:
The most fibrous foods - Apple - Spinach - Kale - Steamed Beetroot - Burghul / Cracked Wheat ( Tabouli) - Mulakhiya ( an egyptian veg from the spinach family.Very good for water retention and constipation) - Dried Fruit and Nuts - A cup of all Bran Cereal first thing in the morning Check out this website
